Book Description

April 2, 2002
Mystery and suspense combine in this first book in an exciting new 4-book series by best-selling author Terri Blackstock. Thelma and Wayne Owens run a bed and breakfast in Cape Refuge, Georgia. They minister to the seamen on the nearby docks and prisoners just out of nearby jails, holding services in an old warehouse and taking many of the 'down-and-outers' into their home. They have two daughters: the dutiful Morgan who is married to Jonathan, a fisherman, and helps them out at the B and B, and Blair, the still-single town librarian, who would be beautiful if it weren't for the serious scar on the side of her face. After a heated, public argument with his in-laws, Jonathan discovers Thelma and Wayne murdered in the warehouse where they held their church services. Considered the prime suspect, Jonathan is arrested. Grief-stricken, Morgan and Blair launch their own investigation to help Matthew Cade, the town's young police chief, find the real killer. Shady characters and a raft of suspects keep the plot twisting and the suspense building as we learn not only who murdered Thelma and Wayne, but also the secrets about their family's past and the true reason for Blair's disfigurement.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Although Blackstock, a former bestselling romance author in the general market, is now well-known in the CBA for her writing partnership with Beverly LaHaye, her most successful books belong to the inspirational suspense genre, and this novel is no exception. On a small barrier island east of Savannah, Ga., lies Cape Refuge, the site of Hanover House, a halfway home for ex-cons and derelicts run by the island's most beloved no-nonsense Christian couple, Thelma and Wayne Owens. But when the Owenses are found spear-gunned through their throats in their warehouse church, the island and its inhabitants get turned upside-down. The Owens's daughter Morgan's husband, Jonathan, is charged with the murder, but former drug addict Gus Hampton and Hanover House resident Richard Dugan also fall under suspicion. As the Owenses' other daughter, Blair who has spent a lifetime rejecting faith and love because of facial scars from the mysterious burns she suffered as a young child examines her parents' papers, she discovers that Thelma and Wayne had a very shady past. Also drawn into the web of intrigue is a homeless teenager who comes to Hanover House seeking shelter from an abusive family. The pacing is a bit slow at the start, but good writing, well-honed descriptive details, compelling characters and a conclusion that doesn't succumb to pat answers keep the pages turning, making this an engaging novel for fans of Christian nail-biters.

From Library Journal

Cape Refuge is a peaceful island off the coast of Savannah, GA, a place where the weary and the persecuted retreat to find themselves again. Nothing bad happens here until Wade and Thelma Owens are murdered. Prior to their deaths, the couple had been under pressure from the town council to shut down Hanover House, their bed-and-breakfast for lost souls, because some of their clients had criminal records. And Jonathan Cleary, the couple's son-in-law, had wanted to move his wife, Morgan, out of the house, fearing for her safety. Blair Owens, the second daughter, had moved out years ago and become the town librarian, seeking refuge in books from scars incurred during a fire. When motive and means point to Jonathan, the sisters band together to find the true killer. As Morgan takes over running Hanover House, her example reawakens Blair's interest in God even as they discover that their perfect parents were keeping secrets that may have killed them and endangered everyone at Hanover House. Because of her strong and lengthy publishing history, Blackstock (Emerald Windows) belongs in library collections as a standard purchase; this first book in an new series is an excellent starting point.

More About the Author

Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. Terri spent the first twelve years of her life traveling in an Air Force family. She lived in nine states and attended the first four years of school in The Netherlands. Because she was a perpetual "new kid," her imagination became her closest friend. That, she believes, was the biggest factor in her becoming a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

In 1994 Terri was writing for publishers such as HarperCollins, Harlequin, Dell and Silhouette, when a spiritual awakening drew her into the Christian market. As she was praying about her transition, she went on a cruise and noticed that almost everyone on the boat (including her) had a John Grisham novel. It occurred to her that some of Grisham's readers were Christians, and that if she wrote a fast-paced thriller with an added faith element, she might just find her niche. As God would have it, Christian publishers were showing interest in the suspense genre, so she quickly sold a four-book series to Zondervan. Since that time, she's written over thirty Christian titles, most of them suspense novels.

Besides entertaining her readers, Terri tackles issues that she hopes will change lives. Her recent book, Predator, was inspired by her experiences on Facebook and Twitter, and her concern that people posted too much personal information about themselves. The book deals with an online predator who uses social networks as his playground. She hopes the book will change readers' online habits. Her New York Times best-seller, Intervention, was inspired by her own personal struggles with a daughter on drugs. In the book, a mother hires an interventionist for her drug-addicted daughter. But on the way to treatment, the interventionist is murdered, and the daughter disappears. Barbara, the mother, sets out to search for her daughter. Terri modeled Barbara after herself, and poured many of her own emotions and experiences into that character. As a result, many families experiencing drug addiction have written to thank her for telling their story and giving them hope.

Other recent books include her stand-alone novel Shadow in Serenity, and Vicious Cycle (Book 2 in her Intervention Series). She's also known for popular series such as the Restoration Series, the Cape Refuge Series, the Newpointe 911 Series, and the SunCoast Chronicles series.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as "The 700 Club" and "Home Life," and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Whodunnit! August 23, 2002
Format:Paperback
Well, after deciding I needed to expand my repertoire of authors that I read, I happened to see Ms. Blackstock on a talk show--and she discussed briefly this new book. I had heard of her previous pseudonyms, used in the secular market, but never read her--they were romance. This book sounded perfect, and I was not disappointed! The characters are well developed, the storyline moves at a good pace, and as the reader approaches the end...you can't wait to find out...whodunnit? And what a twist! I read this over the span of 24 hours--I had to sleep and take care of my little ones, you know--and boy, was it satisfying! And I see it's Book 1 of a new series! Well, now I need to go back and read her Newpointe 911 series, as I wait for the next installment of Cape Refuge! If you like suspense, mystery and a "clean" read, you won't be disappointed with this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cape Refuge Series May 10, 2006
Format:Paperback
When I find out about a good series, I try to read them in order but it's time consuming to find the order in which they're written. So, I'm going to provide that for anyone else who's interested.

Read the Cape Refuge Series in this order:

Cape Refuge

Southern Storm

Rivers Edge

Breaker's Reef

This is an excellent series of stories following characters you'll soon realize you care deeply about. Truly an enjoyable experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surpassing Greatness May 25, 2002
Format:Paperback
I first became hooked on Terri Blackstock when I read the "Newpointe 911" series. After that, I read her previous series, "SunCoast Chronicles". They were all great (Newpointe being far better), and this new series will have no problem living up to her name.
I found the characters in Cape Refuge to be quite engaging. Unlike some previous books, this one didn't throw you at the bad guy right away. Some major plot twists keep you guessing for a while. (You may think it's this person, but then this person, but wait that person is lying...maybe...)
A very awesome read and highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars a mystery novel or sunday sermon? January 21, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
For anyone who is a mystery buff, this book is painful. The book begins with the murder of a beloved couple on Cape Refuge. Their distraught daughters are determined to learn the truth about their parents' lives and brutal deaths. Intriguing! But then author looses focus and starts putting her characters in jail so she won't have to weave them into the plot. One of the protagonists spends the whole book behind bars, and he never even consults an attorney. Unbelieveable! A good portion of the story is devoted to the characters' relationship to God, which may please some readers, but in reality, it acts like a filler so the author can keep the readers busy, and hope that they won't notice the glaring lack of a substantive story. I downloaded this authors second book, before I read this one, but will be sending it to kindle heaven unread.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating July 12, 2002
Format:Paperback
Author Terri Blackstock once again displayes her supurb talent with this well written fast-paced suspenseful narrative. Her down-to-earth realistic characters capture your heart as they struggle with the unexpected and brutal murder of Thelma and Wayne Owens. The drama and dialogue in "Cape Refuge" will keep you reading long after midnight. This hard-to-put-down Christian novel will turn you into a Blackstock fan. "Cape Refuge" a memorable novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could hardly put it down! December 23, 2002
Format:Paperback
Well, I've been reading Terri Blackstock's books for several years now, first the Sun Coast series then the Newpointe 911 series. After reading Cape Refuge, I think I may have to bump Sue Grafton from the top of my favorite contemporary authors list. Blackstock is a consistent winner. The characters in this book are all well developed, even the minor ones. The pacing is great. It doesn't suffer from that "plod along for 200+ pages then hurry up and solve the crime" problem that many modern mysteries do. I really can't recommend this book, and Blackstock, highly enough. If you like Christian mysteries, start reading this woman's work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Suspense! Great read! September 1, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book on my kindle last month.

What a great book!

Suspenseful and exciting from page one all the way through to the end. I found myself loving the characters as their expressions of faith were laid out on the pages. Two sisters are set to inherit the family-run halfway house when their parents were murdered disagree over whether to buy or sell. The halfway house inhabitants are fair game in the murder investigation. Because they are down on their luck or just out of prison - each of them is questioned and suspected even though they have made a full profession of faith in Christ and they have paid their respective debts to society.

While the accusations fly, the City Council moves to close down the halfway house, claiming it is a menace to the community.

A great suspense-filled book as the sisters take the City Council to task.

Surprises throughout the book will keep you reading all the way to the end - which leads you to the next book in the Series.
