3.0 out of 5 stars mostly great, if you're patient, December 5, 2010
This review is from: Cape Verde: Anthology 1959-1992 (Audio CD)
Rarely do you come across anything from Cape Verde in your day to day. Most Americans confuse what they hear or see from these small African islands as Brazilian export, meaning Cesaria Evora's not from Brazil... Is it the Portuguese or African influence that conjures this confusion? Of course it's both. I've enjoyed owning this CD. Saloon style pianos mix with that distinct West Coast African drums and ballad-nee-fado tone, bemoaning the melancholy, and guitars, of at least two cultures... it's a wholly other entity of music. This type of nostalgia could make beautiful scenes in cinema. The time range certainly throws in some inconsistency... you won't listen to every song. However, the songs you DO listen would've NORMALLY been worth the price of admission...

if it weren't so over priced. Web folks are asking for far too much.

In fact, I'd give it 4 stars but the price doesn't warrant that. I work at a record store. This thing sold new for 16 bucks back in the day, when folks USED to spend money on cds. It was cheap then, a tourist-y, no-name label compilation. Given it's vintage and it's character, I'd be willing to pay 20 or so today. MAYBE 25, accepting I was a freak about owning things and just had to have it. The digital age has made most of this unnecessary. Wait for a better deal.
