About the Artist

The Brassworks is a group of professional San Francisco Bay Area musicians, founded and led by trumpeter/arranger Frank Beau Davis, a native San Franciscan, and a graduate of Lowell High School and San Francisco State University. The Brassworks Quintet consists of Tuba, Trombone/ Euphonium, French Horn, and 2 Trumpets, doubling on Cornet, Flugelhorn and Piccolo Trumpet. The 6-piece Brassworks Band is made up of this versatile Quintet, plus the Band's co-founder and drummer, multi-talented Dave Miles, A.K.A. "The Hurdy-Gudy Man". The Brassworks performs a wide range of musical styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical & Romantic, Folk & Fiddle Tunes, Marches, Ragtime, Dixieland, Blues, Swing, Rock, Motown, Latin, Broadway Show Tunes and Concert works. The Band’s specialty, to which this album is devoted, is period ballroom music from 18th and 19th century Europe and America.

The Brassworks Band made its public debut at the 1983 Dickens Christmas Fair. It represented the joining of forces of Frank Beau Davis, whose Brassworks Variety Brass Quintet had just started earlier that year as the Strolling Brass at Great America Amusement Park, and drummer David Miles, whose experience with the Pips Orchestra and Micawber’s Brass Band at several previous Dickens Fairs helped make The Brassworks an instant hit with the dancing public. The Brassworks has been a popular attraction at other Living History events, such as the Old California Days, Old San Francisco and Gold Rush Fairs. The Band performs for period dance events all over Northern California, including the National Civil War Association’s annual Blue-Grey Ball, the Monterey & Benicia Grand Balls, San Juan Bautista’s Fandango Ball, and Stanford University’s Vintage Dance Week, where the Band works with famed dance master Richard Powers. The Brassworks Band is featured six times a year at the very popular series of Ye Gaskells Victorian Balls in Oakland’s magnificent Scottish Rite Ballroom. As of November 1998, The Brassworks Band has started a new series of Waltz Evenings at Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center in Berkeley. The Band's other CD, "The Congress of Vienna", is available in the Classical Music category. To contact The Brassworks, please send email to Brassworks@earthlink.net.
