Out of Nowhere
on April 17, 2013
Capital Kings' initial outing strikes a chord - and fills a need - that hasn't been hit since electronic artists like Earthsuit were making brilliant music before their time. Electronica-heavy beats with lyrics ranging from rap to auto-corrected singing round out this effective album which hits somewhere between 'Family Force 5' 'Owl City' and 'Manafest'.
However effective and relevant Capital Kings' sound is, the album does suffer from a momentum drop off a quarter of the way in to the album. It's easy to see why with a first track as powerful as "All the Way" followed by the driven collaboration with Tobymac, "We Belong As One".
Capital Kings certainly knows what sound they are trying to emulate - building on recent successes of electronica in mainstream music - and for the most part, does so quite effectively. The album never quite matches the full-out strength of "All the Way", but does offer enough upbeat tunes to keep your youth group's energy up.
Capital Kings have shown their prowess as remix artists on some of Tobymac's remixed tracks and this is really their strength. I would love to see their lyricism mature and grow and become less one-note, as it can feel rather bland throughout the album.
