Some of the best capitalist writers come from other nations where they have personally lived under socialism. They are among the best because they have experienced the disappointments, the abuses of process, even the sadism of the State. It is as if all bureaucrats eventually come to disrespect humanity for trusting them.
By way of recounting factual soviet history, his own once happy youth, and by way of a series of stories, Leon Weinstein furnishes dozens of examples of how far we Americans have come into socialism. Chronicled by a man who lived it, like Orwell, Leon Weinstein is a former denizen of despair under Communism. He has the benefit of experiencing freedom before Communism, life under Communism, and then life after Communism where it once reigned. This is a most accurate perspective.
For Americans, a warning: Leon chronicles the subtle steps of incrementalism, political lies, broken promises, preferences and corruption, and of course, the cruelty of the State, along with one more tragically important fact: that citizens wait far, far too long to protest the taking of their very lives.
Capitalism 101 is the one preventative for the misery of statism, wherever it may be, including here.
Riddle #16 is one of many of the author's examples of how stealthy socialism is and how angry socialism is at its core. Statism in any form is an anger of old, one which loses all perspective and integrity in order to soothe that anger, that one, misguided quest. Riddle #16 is as Leon describes these, fables, and, like all fables, there is a moral lesson. It is a very good way to illustrate what no socialist country on earth has escaped: utter misery. Socialism is a predatory practice which succeeds for the predator and fails for the producers ...As intended.Read more ›

On the positive side, both books represent a growing body of citizens who understand that big government is very much alike to central government, and both are forms of fascism / socialism that are bad for the majority.
On the negative side, neither book seems to appreciate the fact that the Republican Party is every bit as corrupt as the Democratic Party.
Being already predisposed to agree with the author on the fundamentals, I found the book interesting but disconnected from a great deal of what I have been working on, including transparency, truth, and trust. Both the Republican and Democratic parties are corrupt; both have been busy borrowing a trillion dollars a year in our name while seeking to regulate our lives into misery.
The book is clearly a labor of love and a gift to us all. It does not have an index or references. I salute the author for taking the time to write and publish this book--Thomas Jefferson said "A Nation's best defense is an educated citizenry," and one can clearly find educated citizens reading this book and thinking about these challenges.Read more ›

Leon is a Russian emigrant who lived under the iron fist of Stalin and escaped the tyranny of socialism to enjoy the fruits of capitalism that America offers. Who better to write about the nightmare of Communism/socialism and the freedom of capitalism.
Weinstein's book is a must read for anyone who is concerned with the rise of socialism and the expansion of government in America

A friend told me about this book. I am not big on reading political literature but my friend's reaction to the read was more than surprising. So i decided to try it out. I got to say, my reaction was not any less. I've never read anything like it. Stories that are told in a very light manner...but by the time you finish reading each one, you are filled with such strong emotions! You want to argue with yourself! Make reasoning! Want to prove the writer wrong!... But you cant.. Absolutely incredible how simple little stories that could be entertaining for 10 year olds...make you change your outlook on every aspect of life. What is free will? Who should be in charge of what?.. What is fair and to who?.. I would love to hear a good debate on this book's subject matter. We read so many magazines, silly romance stories..that bring no change into our lives. It is so rare to read something that will move you. Change you. I would truly suggest this book to anyone and everyone that knows how to read. As simple as that!..
