Book Description

December 26, 1986 0521336562 978-0521336567
This is a study of the choices faced by socialist movements as they developed within capitalist societies. Professor Przeworski examines the three principal choices confronted by socialism: whether to work through elections; whether to rely exclusively on the working class; and whether to try to reform or abolish capitalism. He brings to his analysis a number of abstract models of political and economic structure, and illustrates the issues in the context of historical events, tracing the development of socialist strategies since the mid-nineteenth century. Several of the conclusions are novel and provocative. Professor Przeworski argues that economic issues cannot justify a socialist programme, and that the workers had good reasons to struggle for the improvement of capitalism. Therefore, the project of a socialist transformation, and the fight for economic advancement, were separate historical phenomena.

4.0 out of 5 stars An great book, January 7, 2002

This book bring to us a different marxism, because
Przeworski uses neoclassical economic tools in his book. He studies the social democracy under a strategic choice of the labours' party in Europe: participate in the political game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gramcsi and modern economics, October 29, 2003
By
Samppa Sirno (Tampere, Finland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Capitalism and Social Democracy (Studies in Marxism and Social Theory) (Paperback)
Przeworskis book is an attemp to revitalize maybe the most reliable of marxist theories: Antonio Gramcsis theory of hegemony. Even if the rest of the marxist theory is dead, there still is an hegemonic project, namely that of the right wing. That is why Przeworkis answer, to use modern economic theories to descripe the old project of the left, namely the welfare state is very important if left is to go on counter attac against neoliberalism. And Przeworski even offers alternative economic theory to present day free market thinking. The left has alternatives and you can learn from the past in building them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply, A Masterpiece, May 2, 2001
This review is from: Capitalism and Social Democracy (Studies in Marxism and Social Theory) (Paperback)
If you are an absent-minded student of politics, read any of Huntington's books, and you'll like it. If you are just an ordinary student of political science, read any of text books, and you'll learn something from it. But If you think you are a serious student of social sciences, read any of Przeworski's books, and you'll be impressed with disillusionment. <Capitalism and Social Democracy> is the masterpiece among his works, increadibly smart, highly sophisticated, and provocative. Had Karl Marx read this book, he would have had no choice but to revise his famous book.
