About the Author

Cheryl Bolen is the New York Times, USA Today best-selling author of more than a dozen Regency-set historical romance novels. Her books have placed in several writing contests, including the Daphne du Maurier, and have been translated into 11 languages. She was named Notable New Author in 1999, and in 2006 she won the Holt Medallion (Honoring Outstanding Literary Talent) for Best Short Historical Novel. In 2012 she won Best Historical in the International Digital Awards for eBooks published the prior year, and one of her 2011 novellas won Best Historical Novella. Her books have become Barnes & Noble and Amazon bestsellers. Many of her readers love her many marriage of convenience stories. Her lighter books have been compared to Georgette Heyer, and her more emotional reads (where the heroine has many obstacles before her happy ending) have been compared to Mary Balogh. Cheryl recently returned to her first love of romantic suspense and mystery with fast-paced plots featuring heroines in peril and the strong men they can lean on. It was these books which first got her noticed in the publishing world when her manuscripts won many contests. A former journalist who admits to a fascination with dead Englishwomen, she is a regular contributor to The Regency Plume, The Regency Reader, and The Quizzing Glass. Many of her articles can found on her website, www.CherylBolen.com, and more recent ones on her blog, www.CherylsRegencyRamblings.wordpress.com. Readers are welcomed at both places. Cheryl holds a dual degree in English and journalism from the University of Texas, and she earned a master's degree from the University of Houston. She and her professor husband are the parents of two sons, one who is an attorney, and the other a journalist. Her favorite things to do are watching the UT Longhorns, reading letters and diaries of Georgian Englishmen, and traveling to England.

2.0 out of 5 stars An okay read November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book started out great and immediately had me wanting to read more. However, I didn't like that half of the book was dedicated to retelling the events that lead to the scene of the opening chapter. I would have preferred more action.

3.0 out of 5 stars All but the ending September 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Capitol Offense begins with the heroin, Lacy Blair on the run and the plot thickens from there. The author does a good job fleshing out Lacy's character but comes up short with the rest of the cast. We hardly know her lawyer friend Mike who she calls to come to her rescue. The bad guys are almost believable except for Pete who is feared for what he does and Bolen tells us little about him.

There are moments of excitement and hope that Lacy will kept safe but these are not enough to bring the book above three stars. For 3/4 of the book I was entertained but the finish was a looser. The FBI agents did hardly anything. McNally's change of heart was good but the end for the two main bad guys was poorly done. The ending seemed to be thrown together to make a deadline. It could have been much better. I also think the book could have been a bit longer. This author shows promise and let's hope her future books bear this out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great read for an election year! August 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Who do you trust when you can trust no one? When our main character stumbles across some information that could really damage her very powerful politician boss, she finds herself in a very dangerous situation that could cost her life. This was a great read with the exception of the ending which seemed a bit rushed to me.

Capitol Offense (Texas Heroines in Peril) by Cheryl Bolen is a quick read with an intriguing plot which moves along at a fast pace. Lacey Blair accidentally discovers that her boss, Lt. Governor of Texas, Jim Chambers, has illegally diverted millions of dollars of state funds. As her investigation progresses, she becomes a target. She realizes that Jim Chambers has ordered the assassination of several people and she is next on their list. For help, Lacey contacts Mike, a former lover and friend. Together the good guys win again.

This book is 116 pages......a nice length to be read at the beach or by the pool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Romantic Suspense October 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lacy Blair believes she has found her dream job as speech writer for the Lieutenant Governor of Texas, until she discovers that her boss may not be the paragon she thought. Her attempts to do the right thing and expose corruption throw her into the path of men who will stop at nothing to protect their illegal activities, and it will take all of her wits--and her lost love--to survive. I read this short novel in one sitting; the action pulled me in and never let up. Definitely recommended.

This is an excellent book, great story and well written and it is in line with some of the present day politicians.I am also pleased with the way the author handled the sexual part, the couple went to bed and that was it.no big deal.It was a pleasure to read this book. Many thanks to the author for a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable October 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's listed as a romantic suspense, and other than her thinking about this guy Mike all the time, there's no steamy romance to this book at all. The story line begins more like a legal thriller, seems like it would be a good one, but it goes down hill very quickly. There are quite a few slow spots that I felt I had to trudge through to see what happens, then I get to the end, and it's all wrapped up in a few short pages. Definitely felt rushed to me, like the author didn't want to take the time to make the ending as detailed and drawn out as the rest of the book. I honestly feel like I wasted my time reading it. If the author spent a little more time, proof reading and editing (for instance, I found several spots it said "or" instead "of") this may have turned out to be a better book, and it definitely needs to be relisted as a mystery or thriller, because it's not much of a romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars a good read September 6, 2012

I enjoyed the book. At first I was uncertain because the title seemed (to me) to indicate a romance-ish type of book. But there was more action than romance, which I appreciated.

Wow. Dull, no plot, no surprises. I'm not going to bother finishing this one. Kind of reminds me of the early Harlequin romance books. I don't suppose I can get my money back....
