Editorial Reviews

First time on CD for these hard-to-find gems from the breakthrough Capitol years of this adored American vocalist. There's an accent on the romantic here as he sings The One for Me; Bundle of Love; You Locked Your Heart; Take My Heart; Who Sends You Orchids; Don't Leave Me , and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars With Mel The Trite Can Become Fluid And Swinging, June 29, 2009
This review is from: The Capitol Rarities (1949-1952) (Audio CD)
Most of these tunes could be categorized as seemingly harmless and pedestrian, but they become mellow jazz chestnuts when rendered with the pipes of mellifluous Mel. This is true especially with the nearly obscure number "There's An 'X' In The Middle Of Texas," which was also recorded by Bob Crosby and The Bobcats(an instrumental version aircheck), Dennis Day, Tony Martin, and Lawrence Welk. Torme's version is certainly in line with Bob Crosby's rhythmic touch, but surprisingly Welk's version is also lively. At any rate, the entire program is most welcome in the light of day; it should have been more accessible long ago.
