5.0 out of 5 stars marvelous fiction of early 1910 west coast shipping business, February 4, 2008

This review is from: Cappy Ricks or the Subjugation of Matt Peasley (Hardcover)
a really marvelous, snappy story of a young upstart seaman tussling with the home office. expertly set in 1910's US west coast shipping, the story features richly detailed plots of shippers clawing at eachother using obscure admiralty law; business contract law and office politics are excellently woven into the plots and still ring true today. also nicely captures the shift from sail to steam and the global timber trade, a large dose of horatio alger and a predictable but enjoyable 'boy chases bosses daughter' suplot. not for everyone, but in the genre of historic coastal shipping fiction this is truly a forgotten gem.
