They nearly thought of everything..., September 7, 2000

This machine seemed like it had everything I was looking for: a water filter, a gold coffee filter, a timer, and a thermal carafe. It does have all those things and it makes excellent coffee. I LOVE waking up and having my coffee already made. However, there are silly little drawbacks like the fact that it's very hard to tell how much water you're putting in, the carafe cannot be placed on the burner unless it is partially open (to allow the coffee in while brewing, I suppose), and it doesn't stay as hot as I would like. Not bad, you can adapt to these things, but I had hoped for a little smarter design for this price. I didn't have the trouble with quality other reviewers have mentioned. It seems perfectly well made. If Capresso reads these reviews and makes some small modifications, it will be a perfect coffeemaker.

not quite as great as reviewed, August 18, 2000

This coffee maker makes wonderful, arromatic coffee and the timer feature is convenient. The water filtration system works great. Potential problems are with the cafafe- if not inserted into the unit correctly, spillage can occur. This is also a problem if the swing-out filter door is not fully closed. Your coffee will be on the floor. The only other complaint I have is the cafafe will not store in the unit while the carafe lid is closed. Not space saving in a small kitchen.

My Best Coffee Maker Ever!, September 20, 2002
This review is from: Capresso 437.01 Elegance 8-Cup Digital Thermal Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I am sitting here drinking a great cup of coffee as I write this review. We have used this coffee maker for over two years now. It makes the best pot of coffee of any coffee maker we have ever had. It is very good at keeping the coffee hot. We ordered a second carafe and that way we can have two pots of coffee going when we have company. The only problem that I experienced was easily corrected. The filter door did pop open. I lifted out the coffee basket and on the bottom was a drip valve. Without going through all the explanation, it was this part that caused the door to open. It was easy to remove the offending part. This drip valve is only necessary if you remove the carafe to get a cup of coffee before the coffee making cycle is finished. For me, this was not a big thing to give up. To remove the part, place the coffee basket upside down on the kitchen table and unsnap the drip valve. The part will be obvious; there are no tools required. Problem solved! We use filtered water to make coffee; thus we don't worry about the charcoal filter. I don't believe most people change that filter as often as is necessary anyway. As a last comment, we tested paper filters and permanent gold filter baskets. We found the filter that works best is the Melitta Natural Brown #4 paper filter. It is head and shoulders above the rest.
