For the past several years I had been using the uber-popular KRUPS 203-70 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder with Stainless Steel Blades, White. It finally died, and I decided I wanted to try something new. The Capresso grinder is a bit bigger than the Krups and doesn't feel as solid. The Capresso does have a cord storage, which helps compensate for its larger size. Unlike the Krups, it gives a consistent coarser grind which I find is better suited to drip coffee. I often found that the Krups grind could be too fine, and I had to make sure I pulsed the grinder carefully. With the Capresso, I can just hold down the button for a couple intervals and not worry that my coffee will be powdery. Overall, the Capresso is a fine (err... coarse) grinder.

I had an older model of this exact grinder, but the cord became split in places and I worried about getting an electrical shock. Other than that, it performed just fine for many years. The newer design is much gentler on the cord storage, and is on the bottom, out of sight now. The new model is much more quiet too, and I really like that! I have had burr grinders in the past, but I always come back to this type. When it came time to replace it, I looked at all of the types of grinders available and still chose this one over all of the others! I am very particular about my coffee beans, I buy them whole and grind them right before I use them in a Bodum French Press Pot...nothing compares to this combination for me! Twenty years and I get perfection every morning without fail...tried and true!!

This was the winning coffee grinder by the good people of ATK, which is why I bought it. Not expensive at all, and super quiet.

It's cute. It's quiet.

It doesn't matter what you do, how long you grind, slap the side as the instructions say, even turn it upside down, shake it like Elvis and grind until you fall asleep -- there will probably be beans that are untouched virgins when you scoop out the ground coffee. Even if there are not, you will find pockets of course ground beans. The chamber is small, but the blades are smaller. They are far above the bottom, so there is room for a convention of beans down there, and the small blades quickly throw up a layer of ground beans along the walls that stick there and don't grind unless you get them off the walls. The best way is to open it and stir the contents with a spoon and that just makes a mess. Even then as you scoop the grounds out, there may be whole beans left. The blades are too short and too slow to impart much velocity to the grind and quickly are just whirring around in a pocket while most of the coffee is not involved in the process.

And then, if you want to make ten cups worth of ground beans, the small chamber will inevitably spill ground coffee on the counter even with the most cautious scooping. This thing is only a good fit for percolator grind, and it's too small to even make a half pot's worth.

I got this as a gift cause my old one of 20 or more years is getting old and yellow. The blade is way to high set from the bottom of the chamber. Which makes it unable to get the contents ground and leaves all kinds of big pieces. So Im still using my trusty old one that I can no longer find..

I have been happily using a Mr. Coffee grinder for about 8 years, until my son used it for grinding almonds. I quickly needed a new grinder and I grabbed at the local BBB for $20 - 20% = $16. First I read the manual, to make sure I'm doing everything right, i.e. if it doesn't work well then it's the grinder's fault not mine. I wanted to be fair.
I measured the maximum amount of coffee the manual suggests, 40 grams. I turned on the grinder for 3x10 seconds, as suggested. Between the "runs", I lightly tapped the grinder, as suggested. Then put it back to the counter, which is frustrating to do, as the cord comes from the bottom of the appliance, and every time you put it down you have to find the little opening where the cord should come out and place the cord in there, otherwise the grinder doesn't sit flat. After total 30 seconds, the result was way too coarse coffee at the top half, and a cake of very fine powdered coffee at the bottom half. You know like the sand cookies the kids make at the playground. That needs to be scraped out from the bottom.
I was thinking about my old coffee grinder... Finely, evenly ground coffee, no cake. If there was a bit that got stuck to the bottom, a light touch was enough to move it. I tried the Capresso one more time, then put it back into the box. I ordered the good old Mr Coffee from Amazon for $15 (I now had enough ground coffee until it arrives) and returned the Capresso.

We had several other grinders before we tried this one and it is by far the very best. It quickly and evenly grinds the beans to the desired size.
