June 28, 1973
From the fall of Londinium to the building of Hadrian's Wall, and the final departure of the Romans from Britain ...Rosemary Sutcliff's absorbing collection of stories, set at the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, follows the fortunes of a family over three hundred years. All soldiers, they are linked by the Capricorn bracelet, first worn by the centurion Lucius for distinguished conduct, then handed down through the generations. "This is more than a piece of history, battles and centurions; it's a slice of life ...the stories are exciting and compelling ...every one is well-worth reading." - Wendy Cooling.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Capricorn Bracelet (Hardcover)
The Capricorn Bracelet began as a series of radio scripts Rosemary Sutcliff wrote for the BBC. She later expanded them to form six stories. The bracelet of the title is passed down through successive generations of a Roman military family serving in northern Britain. Each story is told in the first person, and centers on one significant event: the destruction of a city, a new leader assuming command, a Saxon coastal raid.

Rosemary Sutcliff is perhaps the best juvenile historical novelist. She published 46 books for children; less than half are readily available. If you are new to her work, begin with The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, Outcast, The Lantern Bearers, Warrior Scarlet - all are in print. If you gobbled up what's in print and are hungry for more, The Capricorn Bracelet will whet your appetite (and it's relatively inexpensive used). I hope someday soon a publisher will bring back The Mark of the Horse Lord, Dawn Wind, Knight's Fee, The Shield Ring, and other Sutcliff titles I'm searching for.

This book was exciting,I couldn't put it down, I read it in one sitting. Any middle school to adult reader would enjoy this book. The book is a historical fiction. It is 6 short stories about one family who passes a Roman military bracelet from generation to generation. I think young males will enjoy this book most of all. There is no magic or weird stuff, it is as if you are reading a family's personal journals through the ages.
