Proving his overall love of rock 'n' roll structures and willingness to operate on a lower commercial plane than he'd become accustomed to Tramp sends forth Capricorn to a not anticipating at all audience. And you know what? It's a lovely piece of work by a singer-songwriter whose music really is his career, not just something he was doing to meet chicks.

I really must say that I was very impressed with the Capricorn album by Mike Tramp! This album was given to me as a gift, and I am so grateful that someone was able to find it for me admist all the other Rock Titles/Artists.(THANK YOU AMAZON!) VH-1 aired a special "Where are they now" episode for Rock bands, and I was delighted to discover from that interview that Mike Tramp-formerly of White Lion-had released a solo album. A wish for an album that I heard about finally came true...and boy was I suprised!

In my opinion, this album broke no rules, was not written to shock or offend...or to impress the masses. I listened to the album twice... from beginning to end, and I thought it was a very personal album written by an excellent musician and songwriter, whose expressions within his "own" songs touched me musically and lyrically on a very different level than the music written today has. Thank You Mike Tramp for bringing "music", especially "rock-n-roll", back to what it should be, and was meant to be- a pure expression of self- and putting it on an album which I can say I am very proud to own!

I recommend this album for anyone who is a serious music lover or who simply wants to enjoy good music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, moving, every track is brilliant., November 4, 1999

I am a fan of White Lion, so I bought Capricorn the second I found a copy. I was in for a VERY pleasant shock. Mike Tramp's voice has matured, and gained a richness it lacked during his White Lion tenure. Every song is from the heart, and the album runs the gamut of a fun rocker, to an emotional triumph. I know I'm gushing here, but this is probably my all time favorite album. I can't think of any higher praise.

This a real turn in the right direction for the previous White Lion front man. I use to listen to him when he was with White Lion, but ironically never bought a CD of them. I listen'd to a couple of the sample tracks of Carpricorn and they blew me away. The song writting is so intense. He really cares about his music and other people and it's obviouse through his music. Why doesn't more rock and roll musicians write like this. I can't say enough good things about this album. I am a true fan of him now. I let my wife barrow the CD and had to rip it out of her hands to get it back. I'll buy everything this guy every puts out for now on. He's on tour this summer 2001 and I saw him a couple of nights ago in Indiana at a small club. I stayed around after the set was over and he signed autograph's and talked with everybody that wanted to meet and talk to him. A true class act in an industry of so few. Buy this CD, you won't regret it. I don't!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD, August 23, 1998
This review is from: Capricorn (Audio CD)
People that buy this CD and expect to hear White Lion or Freak of Nature will be disappointed. This CD has ATTITUDE!!! It is 100% rock and roll. Mike Tramp's singing is the best I've ever heard. I love this CD and if you listen to it with an open mind - you will too.

The songs for the most part are full bodied in terms of instrumentation but really are just AOR in terms of heft. Which makes this a good buy for fans of his previous works as it allows you to continue your journey with Tramp, this album allowing him to delve further into his muse and cover a range of lyrical issues - almost exclusivly ones within the human realm and they range from upbeat to maudlin.

Tramps production allows this disc to breath and given virtually everything here is a Tramp composition I guess it makes sense that he'd produce - this being very much his baby. You can find this thing in a couple of versions and the one with four bonus tracks is the one aim for if for no other reason than to get the rather splendid Just A Dream.

A lighter side of Tramp than we'd seen before and the maudlin touches do threaten to overwhelm at times and Already Gone is a fine opener but it would of been nice to get a few more rockin' numbers for variety. Author Martin Popoff put this at #60 in his personal top 100 of the 90's. Personally I can't see that level of brilliance here but I'm glad I bought this and glad the guys still working. It just doesn't hit my stereo that often. 3.5 stars IMHO.

4.0 out of 5 stars A virtual 180 for the White Lion / Freaks of Nature frontman, November 30, 2003

I couldn't believe what was hearing when I first put this CD on. The music on the album was so different from White Lion and FoN that the only thing that still made me believe I was listening to the right CD was teh distinctive rasp belonging to one Mike Tramp... I must say that I am impressed with MT's "more adult" effort. It mixes some catchy bluesy riffs and hook with soulful acoustic songs a-la Counting Crows. Definetely check out the first two tracks and then listen to the rest of the album.

3.0 out of 5 stars The singer from White Lion has grown up, October 30, 2003
This review is from: Capricorn (Audio CD)
After fronting the hair metal act White Lion and the much harder rocking Freak Of Nature, singer Mike Tramp decided to go solo. His debut called "Capricorn" was released in 1998 and the music is far from heavy metal. Some would call this a more mature approach and Mike Tramp is performing a set of songs with an adult touch. The material is not hard or fast but have a over all kind of melancholy to it, often combined with a more melodic and captivating chorus. Mike Tramp is not writing so called "happy songs" and the lyrics often focus on depression, sadness, lost, confusion, exclusion, and abuse. But I would say that "Capricorn" is a good album (even tho its slight tendency of melting together into one long song) and certainly worth checking out either you're a fan of White Lion, Bon Jovi, Joey Tempest, Tom Cochrane or Jimmy Barnes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great effort by the ex-feline, July 22, 1999

Mike Tramp was part of one of the great glam rock bands of the 80's, White lion. With Capricorn, he shows that he has matured into a great songwriter.Great melodies and a no-frills approach work well in keeping you hooked from the first to the last note. The only downside is that the album sounds a little under-produced.Maybe Tramp should have let a seasoned veteran like Bob Rock or Mutt Lang handle the console but trust me it will not keep you from enjoying this otherwise fine album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I excpected, but not bad., June 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Capricorn (Audio CD)
For fans of White Lion and Freak of Nature (Mike Tramps previous bands) you will be a little surprised. This album does not have the heavy guitar or fast passed style his previous bands had. Mike has decided to make a new identity for himself. He tries to sound like Bruce Springsteen (not that there is anything wrong with the BOSS) but it does not really work for Mike. Give me Mike's voice with Vito Bratta's guitar work and superior solos to this stuff. My opinion is to buy it if you are a big fan, but don't be expecting much. And prey that White Lion gets back together. ROCK N ROAR!!!

My wife and I recently saw Mike Tramp in concert and immediately went out and bought his CD. His music is touching--especially the piece "Have You Ever." His lyrics are poetic. And up and coming artist for sure. Enjoy! Jim and Bobbie Jo Staudenmeier
