Soundtrack of our dreams, July 9, 2009

It's difficult to compare this CD with anything else. The cover image is evocative of the mood, but the sensibility is also quite modern. "Capsules" offers 44 minutes of aural filigree that deserve close attention, at least on first listen. It may become wallpaper background after that--even a soundtrack to a family video if your family is a bit moody and mysterious. Perhaps the best way to appreciate the quality of this music is to approach it as one would, say, "
Outer Circles" by Victoria Jordanova or "
Fog Tropes/Gradual Requiem" by Ingram Marshall. I use those as examples because, while they have texture and complexity, they can also become a kind of background--in contrast to, for example "
Boulez: Sur Incises; Messagesquisse; Anthèmes 2." Boulez will drive you nuts if you try to ignore it or push it into the background. My point: "Capsules" is not "difficult music" and should please just about anyone, but you won't be tapping your toes or humming along. It may be the soundtrack of our most interesting dreams.
