I haven't read a graphic novel or a comic book in a long time. David Morrell is one of my favorite writers so when I saw that he'd been involved in this project I had to see what it was about.

Boy am I glad I did.

The book is a combination of 6 comics that I believe were previously released individually and that were combined into one hardback graphic novel. The writing is tight and compelling and tells the story of the decay and death of Captain America as he tries to help develop a new set of heroes by helping them find their own courage.

The majority of the novel is a dialog between a soldier deployed in in the current war and who finds himself in some very tough situations. He believes that Captain America comes to save him but in reality, Captain America is communicating with him from his deathbed, encouraging him, sending him messages of strength and hope, driving him on.

The message of the book is that there is the strength and courage of a hero in all of us and we just need to act on it in tough times.

Very compelling and exciting reading. It made me want to read more graphic novels as a result.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of the best, June 21, 2011
This review is from: Captain America: The Chosen (Hardcover)
I could not resist buying this graphic novel, because it was written by David Morrell, a novel writer I enjoy a lot. Also, Captain America is one of the the Marvel favorites of mine.

But the story is simply so and so. It does not maka an impact. Drawing, however, is very unique and good.

Captain America: The Chosen is one of the best Captain America stories ever told and in my opinion one of the best comic books ever told. Everything about this story is great. It has strong writing and dialogue, feels realistic, and the art is good. It gives a new and interesting take on not only his origin but the character himself without radically changing or destroying them. This comic is absolutely beautiful and I read it frequently.
