I haven't read a graphic novel or a comic book in a long time. David Morrell is one of my favorite writers so when I saw that he'd been involved in this project I had to see what it was about.
Boy am I glad I did. The book is a combination of 6 comics that I believe were previously released individually and that were combined into one hardback graphic novel. The writing is tight and compelling and tells the story of the decay and death of Captain America as he tries to help develop a new set of heroes by helping them find their own courage. The majority of the novel is a dialog between a soldier deployed in in the current war and who finds himself in some very tough situations. He believes that Captain America comes to save him but in reality, Captain America is communicating with him from his deathbed, encouraging him, sending him messages of strength and hope, driving him on. The message of the book is that there is the strength and courage of a hero in all of us and we just need to act on it in tough times. Very compelling and exciting reading. It made me want to read more graphic novels as a result. I could not resist buying this graphic novel, because it was written by David Morrell, a novel writer I enjoy a lot. Also, Captain America is one of the the Marvel favorites of mine.
But the story is simply so and so. It does not maka an impact. Drawing, however, is very unique and good.

Captain America: The Chosen is one of the best Captain America stories ever told and in my opinion one of the best comic books ever told. Everything about this story is great. It has strong writing and dialogue, feels realistic, and the art is good. It gives a new and interesting take on not only his origin but the character himself without radically changing or destroying them. This comic is absolutely beautiful and I read it frequently.

It may have received mix reviews, and in some cases by people who I think inferred a political agenda where one did not exist, but I finished this yesterday and it's a wonderful graphic novel, told beautifully. There's a certain poetic detachment between the story and, yes, reality; but just as all legends are told with romantic embellishment, so does Morrell boldly use the technique here. It is fitting that this story about Captain America read like a narrative anthem.

I have previously purchased the individual comics of this series by David Morrell. As a hobby, I have been collecting David Morrell's work and decided to purchase this hardcover compilation of the comic book series. I didn't have any knowledge of Captain America so found it interesting reading from that point of you. If you're a David Morrell fan, you would find it interesting as it is a departure from his usual works. The hardcover comprises the 6 comics released last year, with the storyline continuing through the 6 comics.

Good, but...,

First, read this guy's good review: Dave Lakhani "BoldApproach.com".
He was the first to review this book. He's right in saying that the message in the book is spot-on, and important. Cap inspiring others from afar, esp one soldier struggling to survive and overcome his own fears, is powerful stuff. Also, the artwork has that sketchy, gritty quality that compliments the writing and topic very well. SPOILER ALERT BUT, my big but, is the premise of Cap suddenly having these psychic powers, which are a side-effect of a medical procedure, coupled with the super soldier serum, amplified by his former career as an illustrator. So, he can see and be seen from half a world away, inspiring allies or terrifying enemies. What a load of hooey. Is that the only way Morrell could have written this? It would have been more believable to have some guy simply be inspired by the idea of Cap, even as a delusion. Or tapping into the collective subconscious. Or carrying a picture in his wallet. But now Cap has been turned into some Phantom Stranger or Specter character. Blech. Still, worth a read. Check your local library. |
