5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cap in Years!
This book is, bar none, the best Captain America book in a long while. Plot twists aside, if you have ever thought about picking up Captain America, or coming back to Captain America this book is for you. Brubaker weaves a twisting tail of corruption and espionage on par with Clancy that is very much rooted in the history and mythos of the Marvel Universe reaching back...

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable until it reaches it's twist
After Brian Michael Bendis' Avengers: Disassembled storyline rocked comicdom, Marvel decided to relaunch Captain America, yet again. This time Sleeper and Catwoman scribe Ed Brubaker gets the task, and as Out of Time unfolds, it appears that Brubaker is molding the Marvel icon for a new generation, beginning with the apparent death of his life long nemesis the Red Skull...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cap in Years!, August 21, 2005
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
This book is, bar none, the best Captain America book in a long while. Plot twists aside, if you have ever thought about picking up Captain America, or coming back to Captain America this book is for you. Brubaker weaves a twisting tail of corruption and espionage on par with Clancy that is very much rooted in the history and mythos of the Marvel Universe reaching back into World War II. You would enjoy this book if you are fan of comics or a fan of TV shows such as 24 or Band of Brothers or anything written by Clancy. Its also a great jumping on point for new comic readers who may be curious about Captain America, SHEILD, Hydra or AIM and the dark corner of the Marvel Universe in which they operate!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain America As He Should Be, August 26, 2005

This is a great story. Cap is more of a war-time hero/soldier then the goody-two-shoes hero I seem to remember. He is fighting the war on terror and has no mercy for the terrorists. He shows no remorse in the death of two and threatens death to a third if he does not defuse a bomb on a train. He also does not just rely solely on his shield. He has a utility belt of sorts which includes explosives. I was a long-time cap fan years ago and actually like what they've done with Bucky/Winter Soldier. I didn't like Brubaker killing off the Red Skull, but I'm sure he'll be back. My only regret is that it is only the first six issues and the story arc is not complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars new to captain america, February 1, 2006

This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
I got into the Avengers with the start of the New Avengers book. I've always like the idea of the team, so that got me hooked on the one. Then I found that there were newer books started on individual characters from the team, so I started picking up Cap and Amazing Spider-man. I like getting a closer look at the individual characters. It gives some depth when reading New Avengers.

Neat book, though. Different from the typical super-hero thing. It has a heavy focus on anti-terrorism. That seems to be the main thrust of Cap as an individual character. These issues have a lot of flashbacks in them drawn differently giving it a very reflective feel - a pleasant change of pace from the average comic. You get a lot of Cap's background from the war. Definitely a good read if you're interested in Captain America or the Avengers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ed Brubaker = Awesome, August 20, 2006
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
Ed Brubaker recently took over the Daredevil comic book series from Bendis, and I have to say it might actually be BETTER now!

Ed is a great story teller - he keeps it simple, but knows how to keep you begging for more. The only reason I don't rate this particular collection a "5" is because Parts 1 & 2 should have been collected into one hardcover...it's really a 2 part story and the only reason it's not is because Marvel wanted to make some $$ on this excellent product ASAP.

Also, it's a 4 (and not a 3) because hardcover is the way to go for such a special collection.

The story - Basically it appears as if Captain America's sidekick (Bucky), supposedly killed during the same botched mission as the Captain was frozen, was re-animated and is now someone named "Winter Soldier." Is it really him? Read the book, true believer...

5.0 out of 5 stars A true "Cap America tale", April 14, 2006
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
It took some time to read a "classic but new tale" of the star spangled avenger. At last, I ve found it. Winter tale is the perfect combination between the old cap stuff, - with the amazing art of Michael Lark- and what it is expected from the Captain America in a quite real scenario- with the revival of the art from Steve Epting. All under the magic wand spell of Mr Brubaker, one of the "hot writers" at this moment in time. A "must have" for everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable until it reaches it's twist, August 3, 2005
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
After Brian Michael Bendis' Avengers: Disassembled storyline rocked comicdom, Marvel decided to relaunch Captain America, yet again. This time Sleeper and Catwoman scribe Ed Brubaker gets the task, and as Out of Time unfolds, it appears that Brubaker is molding the Marvel icon for a new generation, beginning with the apparent death of his life long nemesis the Red Skull who has been assassinated by an unknown assailant refered to the Winter Soldier. Brubaker spans through the Cap mythos, flashing back to his past in World War II and giving us glimpses of his team-ups with Bucky, Namor, and the original Human Torch, and even orchestrates the demise of Cap's former partner Nomad. A mysterious general is pulling all the strings for control of the Cosmic Cube, and the ensuing revelations about the identity of the Winter Soldier essentially betray all the promise that Brubaker sets up. In a nutshell, Out of Time starts out well, but it's big twist nearly kills it, and longtime Cap readers will no doubt be screaming for Brubaker's head. Other than that, it's still a great read, and for the most part it's one of the better Cap stories in the last few years, with solid pencils provided by Steve Epting. For old Cap fans, if you were shaking your head at Bendis' New Avengers, and you haven't heard about this ill-conceived shocker, prepare to shake it some more, but other than that, Out of Time is still a great action/espionage Cap tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story I was missing all yr long, August 15, 2006
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
Its a great Story Marvel has finally found a way to give Captain America some edge or some form of grit to make him real instead of just being symbolistic to its franchis comics already has its square in books and let Superman continue to hold that mantle of being bland.

4.0 out of 5 stars might want to wait for the softcover, October 2, 2005
This review is from: Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (Hardcover)
Well the tale is solid, lots of action, just a couple of bumps in the road there, mainly it's the final story in the book about the hero who was once bucky and then nomad, it's a good story and one that is a bit confusing, i read it once, missed the point and had to read it again, but it hurts the flow of the book a little.

the story is solid but the price, well i say wait for the softcover because the story will just as good and the price a little better, because don't forget this is only art of the story, there will be a second trade your gonna end up buying sinc the book ends on a cliffhanger, and there is a good chance at a hardcover of the two parts together too, so get the cheaper softcover, save a few bucks and pick up the rest in a softcover when it hits.

ok but enough of that, what about the story right? well caps memory is playing tricks on him, things may not be what they seem, looks like some one may be pulling a wolverine on him, and we follow his adventure for answers as he takes on this winter soldier, a mystery fro mthe cold war, an agent brought to life only when the USSR was in the most dire of needs, and he's back and controlled by a former KGB man..who also has his eyes on the cosmic cube, so we have a lot going on, but it's told well.

We see caps pain, a man on edge and the art shines, it's clear, brings a darkness to the world of captain america and controls the mood well, the flashbacks are some of the best parts and makes you wish for a mini series from this team set in the past.

this is one of the better captain america trades, after his marvel knights time that was marked by more than his share ofbad sories, this is a return to the top for captain america, so get on board for the ride while it lasts.
