Very disappointed in this soundtrack. Was mislead in the movie theater when I found that the great track during the preview was not included on this CD. (The only reason I picked this CD up).

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories, April 20, 2002

Awsome music; lyrics, as well as instrumentals. Takes you away to a land of beauty. If you also grew up with Italian music in your home, you may especially enjoy this version of standard favorites such as Santa Lucia and La Donna E Mobile. I consider this movie as the Italian Americans' "Pearl Harbor". Lots of heroism in the movie and the music elaborates on that with spendor.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album to touch your heart, March 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Captain Corelli's Mandolin / Stephen Warbeck (2001 film) (Audio CD)
Although the war scenes in the film are quite successful, the film is mostly a love story and 'music' is in the very heart of it. The main theme 'Pelagia's Song' is a very sentimental melody and the album contains different versions of it. The two romantic songs 'Senza di te' and 'Ricordo Ancor' performed by Russel Watson are simply wonderful. The songs are recorded in the order of events that take place in the film, so careful and imaginative listeners can re-live the film as they listen to the CD. Some songs really make one wish to be able to play the mandolin or to be somewhere on the Mediterranean, listening to such melodies. It is the right choice for those who need some peace of mind. A wonderful album for a wonderful romance...listen to it and dream of love...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Average Rating is Wrong!, August 18, 2001
By

This review is from: Captain Corelli's Mandolin / Stephen Warbeck (2001 film) (Audio CD)
Stephen Warbeck's score for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" is great. "Pelugia's Song" is one of the most haunting love songs in recent memory. The reviews that rate this album based on the fact that it does not include Nina Gordon's great "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" should be removed. As another reviewer writes, movie trailers are prone to grab any music they can to sell a movie. I saw the original trailer in the theatre and it had "Pelugia's Song" played by the entire orchestra and it was fabulous. Then, I guess they were getting desperate because this score does not contain 8,000 rock songs like a lot of today's films usually do. So a new trailer was constructed with Nina Gordon's song, which is also very beautiful but very misleading. Then, I saw another trailer which has some other music in it. Over the years, we have heard themes from "Dragonheart," "The Last Dragon," "The American President," and others slapped over trailers that had nothing to do with the movie. When I saw the first trailer and heard the real music from the film, I was moved and suspicious at the same time: was this the real music from the movie? Or would I have to start searching for somebody's else's soundtrack? No, Nina's wonderful song does not appear in the movie. Instead, we have Russell Watson singing "Pelugia's Song." This is the finest score of the year. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and Sweet, August 10, 2001
This review is from: Captain Corelli's Mandolin / Stephen Warbeck (2001 film) (Audio CD)
It's amazing what you can do with one simple theme, and the soundtrack to "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" proves that. From a lone mandolin, to solo vocals, to a full orchestra, the notes of "Pelagia's Theme" in its various forms and moods pluck on your heartstrings the same way Nic Cage soulfully strums the title mandolin.

I admit that I haven't yet seen the movie, but just from listening to this soundtrack and seeing the trailers, I can see in my mind what will happen...and conveying emotion so well is a mark of a very good score. For those who enjoy, say, "Gladiator," "Titanic," "Braveheart," "Jurassic Park," and other great and sweeping scores, I highly recommend this CD.

I enoyed the boys of La Scala's cheerful singing, a marked contrast to the delicate strings of other tracks, and a sort of sad irony to the devastation of war you know is coming.

The music comes full circle from the bright "Pelagia's Theme" through the powerful, melancholy middle tracks like "Recruiting Officer" and "On the Jetty" back to the hopeful notes of "Reunion". Russell Watson is splendid singing the vocal version of the theme, "Ricordo Ancor" and the more brooding "Senza Di Te." Yeah, I know it's apparently not cool these days to like guys singing Italian opera, but I liked it. Really, I liked it! :-D

I rank Mr. Warbeck as rapidly up and coming towards the fame of James Horner and John Williams--he's that darned good! If you like a powerful, moving score, this CD is for you.

The song that is played during the trailers is Nina Gordon's "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" off her album by the same title.

I grew up with Greek and Italian music and that is one of the reasons I bought this CD in addition to absolutely loving the movie. The music is original and traditional. "The Mandolin" is perfection. If you want to take a romantic journey through another time and place this music will give you that chance.
