A New Hazzard Fan, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Captain Hazzard #3 - Curse of the Red Maggot (Paperback)
Thank goodness Ron found this "lost" tale of Hazzard.
Captain Hazzard is a great character in the Doc Savage mold, complete with a gang of aides. I am glad to see these old pulp era characters coming back to life. I was actually unfamiliar with Captain Hazzard until Ron Fortier brought him back. Boy, what I have been missing. This is a character worthy of revival.
Ron did a good job with this book, because not only do we have the usual globetrotting adventure, but he managed to pull off some gritty realworldisms in the middle of it all which only a very few authors ever accomplish. Lester Dent was great at his, but this book for some reason (probably more than a little to do with its south asian locale) reminds me a lot of Louis L'Amour's Ponga Jim Mayo stories. It is all in the details.
The artwork throughout and the extras were really nice. I love getting behind the scenes information on authors, characters, and stories.
I can't wait to see the new Hazzard tales unfold over time.

Move Over Doc Savage!, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Captain Hazzard #3 - Curse of the Red Maggot (Paperback)
The third entry in the Captain Hazzard series from the modern day king of pulp Ron Fortier is as good as it gets. The eye-popping cover by pulp artist extraordinaire Mark Maddox promises thrills, chills and non-stop action inside and the novel lives up to that promise in spades!
This installment has Hazzard and crew up against a dasterdly villain trying to corner the lucrative fresh pearl market. With a premise such as this, you know you're in for some underwater excitement. Over the course of this rollicking tale, we see Hazzard go up against killer crocs, man-eating sharks, deadly cobras, lethal scorpions and a host of vile henchmen. There's deep sea diving, battles between planes and boats, battles in the air and more than a few damsels in distress, femme fatales and daring last minute escapes.
In a nutshell, CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT is pure pulp gold! The pacing is break neck, the dialog amusing and tough. There's a reason the pulp fiction of the 30s is making a comeback. If you think the edge-of-your-seat excitement of Indiana Jones is something rare to that franchise, then you haven't read classic pulp fiction. And what better place to begin than RED MAGGOT.
This re-edited, updated edition now includes a host of new material ranging from a pin-up gallery of Hazzard and crew from veteran comic artist Rob Davis (who also does the interior illustrations) as well as an interview with Davis who shares his thoughts on his career and the challenge of bringing pulp fiction back to life for a new generation to enjoy.
Whether you're new to pulp fiction or a long-time fan looking to quench that never-ending thirst for excitement, CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT is for you.
