Book Description

He wanted no woman, except one made of sails and wood and wind ...

Handsome, wily Irish privateer Captain Brendan Jay Merrick is running from a painful past -- and fighting for a new nation's future when he arrives in the colonial town of Newburyport, Massachusetts, with plans for shipwright Ephraim Ashton to build his magnificent new schooner. Brendan's daring sea battles against His Majesty's fleet have made him a legend in his adopted country -- but one look at the dashing stranger and Ashton's daughter Mira starts making plans of her own. . . .

She wanted no man -- but him.

Brash, hot-tempered, and born at sea in a raging gale, Mira Ashton is more than most men can manage. Disguising herself as a crew member and sneaking aboard Brendan's newly-built Kestrel, she becomes the schooner's finest gunner . . . and the captain's most outrageous distraction. As desire ignites between them, Mira finds herself competing against Kestrel for Brendan's love. But when tragedy strikes, Mira must join forces with her mighty rival in a daring adventure that turns the tide of battle and brings glorious victory to the colonists, the captain . . . and the lady who has captured his heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! September 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I am seriously so excited to write this review of Captain of My Heart by Danelle Harmon. Let me preface this by saying that I have gone through a little reading slump this year and find it very hard to "fall madly in love" with many books. I promise you, that I did not have that problem with this book. Actually it was quite the opposite. I fell hard and fast and probably now all of the other books I read this year will not compare at all!

With Captain of my Heart I found so many old feelings rushing back while I was reading! Those feelings of angst and being unable to put a book down in the middle of the chapter, or thinking about ALL day at work about getting back to the last place you left off. That warm, achy feeling you get during a really tender kiss or love scene that just makes you find the romantic in you and give them a big old hug. Does any of this sound familiar? Do I sound crazy?! I certainly hope so. That's the only way to be about a book that brings so many emotions to the forefront and at the same time introduces you to a heart stopping h/h like Mira and Brendan. not to mention their quirky secondary cast of characters. I can't remember how long it has been since I have been so in love with a group of characters!

Everything about Captain of My Heart just works! It's a guiltless pleasure of a read with an absolutely fantastic plot full of action, romance, intrigue, the open seas, treachery- it all worked together to simply keep me entranced! The writing is great, the characters both believable and completely over the top and the romance..... the romance is one that grows from page to page until all of a sudden it's this wonderful living, breathing entity taking my breath away.

I loved this entire cast of characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling adventure at the helm of a privateer schooner December 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One word can sum up how I felt about this story: WOW!

I loved it. Loved. It.

Captain Brendan Jay Merrick was a rising officer in the Brittish Royal Navy, until a scourge of a villanous captain tried to kill him, injured his sister, and had him declared a mutinous deserter. Yes, he had a really, really bad day.

Knocked over the side of the ship by the force of the bullet meant to kill him, Brendan Merrick didn't die, however. He had too much of the luck o' the Irish on his side for that to ever happen.

Three years later, the brave Merrick, now an American privateer captain, heads to port to take the plans he has so carefully drawn for a new schooner to a shipbuilder. Not only was he a talented captain, he was an engineer and designer of a craft like the world had never seen. Once again, though, he meets up with that dastardly Brittish captain--and once again he goes over the side to his apparent death.

With more lives than a cat, Brendan is pulled out of the water by Matt Ashton, a privateer captain who just happened to be the son of the very shipbuilder he was on his way to visit. Battered, bruised, and half frozen from his night in the sea, Brendan wakes up in the Ashton house, being stared at by a wild looking creature wearing mens' clothing--who turned out to be a sprite of a woman.

Mira Ashton was not like any woman he'd ever met. First of all, she was fond of dressing in breeches and riding around at break-neck speed on a wild stallion. Then there was the matter of her penchant for shouting matches laced with curses that would make one of Brendan's sailors blush. She couldn't cook AT ALL, prefering to spend her time rescuing defenseless animals.

Captain of My Heart is another great book by Danielle Harmon. She is a wonderful author who really allows you to understand and fall in love with her characters. This book was funny, heart-rewrenching, sensual, and unforgetable. I have yet to read a book by her that I don't love and will read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Book July 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I really loved this book. The main characters are engaging, funny, and easy to get to know. Mira is a young woman who knows more about sailing ships and riding horses that she does about cooking or being dainty. Brendan is a former British Naval Officer who has been shot and assumed dead after falling overboard during a confrontation with another British sea captain. Mira can't cook but she tries and Brendan can't ride a horse. However, they both can sail a ship and know what to do in battle.

Together, Mira and Brendan find the love and understanding that each of them seek. They each go after what they want with sometimes hilarious outcomes. The secondary cahracters only added highlights to the story. Liam and Dalby (especially Dalby) are so funny.

I felt every frustrated, exasperating, loving feeling that they had for each other and their families. I laughed and cried.

I plan to read the rest of the series as soon as possible.
