Captain Penfield was the cousin of breveted Brigadier General John Hammond, also of the 5th NY Cavalry. Penfield offers several first hand accounts of encounters with Mosby. Penfield was captured at Hagarstown MD on July 6, 1863 after having fought at Gettysburg and spent the remainder of the war in southern prisons including Libby, Macon and Charleston. More than 500 different soldiers are mentioned, as Captain Penfield made note of most everyone he met while in prison, and most of them have been identified.
