4.0 out of 5 stars Captain Marvel moves in mysterious ways, January 12, 2004
This review is from: Captain Marvel Volume 2: Coven TPB (Paperback)
This is a collection of the Captain Marvel comic book, issues 9-12 of the current series (begun in 2002). The series is based upon the idea that the alien Captain Marvel, Genis Vell, was gifted with cosmic awareness, allowing him to be aware of things happening all around the universe, the past, the future, potential outcomes of every action happening everywhere, and all this knowledge has driven him insane. Omnipotence hasn't just made him like God, on some level he thinks his is God, or at least a god, and like God he's begun moving in mysterious ways. He is held in check by Rick Jones, a human who Genis shares space with (when one is in this universe, the other is in a place called the microverse, and they switch by engaging the power of Genis' nega bands). The premise of the "Coven" storyline is an interesting bit of speculative fiction. Karl Coven, a serial killer who Rick Jones testified against, is given a lethal injection. He dies. Then he wakes up. The courts now have no idea what to do with him. He served his sentence, he died, and usually once someone has served their sentence, they're let go. And, following the letter of the law, so is Coven. After this point though, it gets a little strange. Captain Marvel, moving in those proverbial "mysterious ways" begins to mentor Coven. Events build, getting stranger and seemingly more out of hand, until the end when Genis finally reveals his "divine plan," though even when it's revealed, you wonder if it's really his motivation. The story is intelligently written, with writer Peter David's customary quality characterization and humor, though it's not a humorous story. The art by Ivan Reis is very good. The only problem with the story is that you can't tell where it's going, but that is part of the point, to show Captain Marvel's skewed way of thinking.
