"Captain Scarlett" is a rather poor excuse for a swashbuckler. Richard Greene is quite game and makes an engaging hero, as he would in his Robin Hood television series a couple years after. However, the supporting cast ranges from second-rate to truly terrible and the story is pretty slight. Furthermore, as might be expected from an Alpha Video release, the film quality is mediocre on this DVD. I only recommend it if you're a real fan of Richard Greene, otherwise, save your pennies.

ALPHA VIDEO offers bargain priced, often hard-to-find vintage movies that are ideal for those willing to skip DVD extras. Their transfers show no evidence of restoration, so quality varies from one title to the next, with "fair to good" being the average.

CAPTAIN SCARLETT is a real turkey that was surely kiddie matinee material six decades ago.

Here you have a princess" disguised" as a man in clingy shape-enhancing trousers that reveal what's missing up front, and a satin blouse that doesn't hide her naders too well. Capt. Scarlett is a hambone in red sash and cape who runs around defeating a half-dozen or more swordsmen with ease.

The only good thing to arise from the Technicolor stinkcloud this one raised is star Greene's collaboration with writer/producer Howard Dimsdale on the ROBIN HOOD TV show, another kidfest. Avoid at all costs!

Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 IMDb viewer poll rating.

(4.7) Captain Scarlett (1953) - Richard Greene/Leonora Amar/Nedrick Young/Manuel Fábregas/Eduardo Noriega/Carlos Múzquiz/Isabel del Puerto/Jorge Treviño

Format: DVD
This movie is set in post -Napoleonic era France but was shot in Mexico using predominantly Mexican actors .The plot concerns the eponymous Scarlett who on returning from the wars finds that his estate has been taken over by the villainous Duke of Corlaine (Manolo Fabregas) .That is not the full extent of Corlaine's villainy however for he is about to arrange for the marriage of the fair Princess Maria (Leonora Ames) to his ally the decadent Count Villiers(Eduardo Norriega )very much against her will.Scarlett organises resistance to his evil schemes by forming an outlaw band ,Robin Hood style ,to fight the oppressor and rescue the damsel in distress.

The movie is shot in a muddy and rather ugly Technicolor and Thomas Carr directs without style or vigour .Add to this the miscasting of (perfectly capable in other roles)Mexican actors as Frenchman and the result is a dull picture with little verve or vigour.Richard Greene is good as Scarlett and he was to play a similar role in TV's The Adventures of Robin Hood in the next decade

A perfectly serviceable tale has been rendered into a dull movie by poor casting ,dull direction and inappropriate locations .
Strictly for the undiscerning viewer.
