Sure it is called a replica, because who would admit making weapons for modern-day buccaneers? I received this neat cutlass as a gift. I found it to be very solidly constructed, and believe me if needed this item would take (and give) punishment. The 440 Stainless Steel blade on mine arrived semi-sharp, and for clarification these steels can definitely TAKE and HOLD an edge. In fact the 440 steels will hold an edge better than some current Spanish steels (read the Sword forums). The heavy handguard is well-detailed and made of nonmagnetic metal, perhaps brass but I cannot tell without risk of damaging the finish. It is certainly not pewter or aluminum. The pommel is probably hollow, but holds very tight to the handle.

About the only weak area is the scabbard...this is where the "replica" description becomes apparent. It is made of plastic (with metal embellishments), and will not hold up to much abuse. Also, you may need to purchase a "frog" if you wish to wear this with your "uniform" or from a belt.

This cutlass is nicely designed. The thick metal guard, with an attractive three-masted galleon relief, makes the hilt very heavy. The skull and bones accents on the throat and tip of the scabbard offer a nice piratical touch. The blade is well-crafted (for a display item) and beautifully polished. There are, however, some quality issues with this Chinese-made item. The wooden scabbard does not hold the blade tightly, especially at the throat, making the blade all to easy to slide out of its sheath. The scabbard also lacks a locket, which is useful for wearing the cutlass and peace-tying (peace-bonding) the blade to the sheath. My sword came with the handle significantly offset from the hilt. This was easily fixed by disassembling the entire hilt and then reassembling it for a tighter fit, but the handle can still be moved when wielding the sword. All in all, it is a handsome piece for the price, but a few improvements would make this cutlass even better.

I read the reviews, and I have to agree. This is a great sword for a pirate costume. I love the fact that it's sharp as hell, but I'm sure I'll eventually hate the fact that it is sharp as hell. If you're dressing up as a pirate, you won't be able to beat this sword for what it cost. I don't know anything about costume swords, but had I paid $60 for this, I still would have thought I received a great deal.

I ordered this basically for a prop. What I got was a real stainless steel sword. I am shocked at the quality of this product for the price. What a deal!

It's a costume prop but maybe my expectations are a little high? When I'm judging my purchase off a picture I'd expect the item to look like the picture when it arrives. Overall the product is nice, the quality seems fine but it isn't what I purchased as it's missing the handguard. Poses a bit of an issue when that's the part that compliments the costume. Contacted the seller with no response. If you're looking to purchase this item and want the handguard I would not recommend this seller.

Not sure what everyone else is getting, but the sword I got today looked nothing like the pictures posted by the vendor. I cannot believe that in this day and age people still try to get away with this. I will be returning promptly.

Major difference: the most beautifing aspect of what is pictured, the handle. In the picture you see a beautiful carved handle with sail ship.

What you get: is a handle with nothing more than a tin piece of metal as the hand covering. Think of the letter P with sword tip pointing downwards. That all you get!

Was shipped very quickly in great condition,build well solid sword and is very sharp , my friends love it. So I had to buy another from seller. Made from right handed person. Wish they had a left handed one .I would buy it too

This is a beautiful piece-both the sword and the scabbard are just beautiful, but be warned that the blade is a fully functional, ultra sharp blade. You'll need to dull it down for costume use or run the risk of hurting yourself or someone else.

This is a magnificent sword of high quality. It was the perfect compliment to my costume, and the very low price made it an unbelieveable bargain. I highly recommend it!

It's a very good sword, my boyfriend was very happy with this sword. I might get one for his nephew as well.

And it arrived right on his birthday too =)
