Not Twain's best work, but not his worst,

This is Twain's satire of contemporary religious mores. It was the last fiction he published in his lifetime, and like much of his later work, it's slightly cynical and very sarcastic, although more upbeat than, for example, _Letters from the Earth_ -- mankind comes across as looking fairly silly overall, but on the whole positive.
Probably of most interest to Twain fans who want to read everything of his that they can, or to scholars writing on Twain's religious views, more than to casual Twain readers. It's mildly amusing throughout, but no more than that, and Twain certainly wrote many other works that were more entertaining and more insightful. It's a fairly short read, at 630 kindle "locations". |
