To start off: I've been reading Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal for years and was excited to support Zach. However, I was somewhat disappointed in Captain Stupendous. It does start strong and it has a few moments of brilliance throughout, but early on the same jokes start to get rehashed over and over. The blurb is exactly what you get - roughly 20 pages of jokes about each of the problems in Captain Stupendous's life. Without much of a plot or character development they start to wear thin by the end.

This comic is great fun -- I've always loved the 'Flawed hero' archetype, but this ... well, this is a little different. There's just the right amount of hyperbole. Hilarious writing, and (despite what that fellow with the one star review says) the art is an excellent complement to the story. I highly recommend.

I'm a huge fan of Zach's SMBC web-comic and when I saw that he had released Captain Stupendous, I ordered a copy right away. I read through it shortly after it arrived and when I got the the end my first thought was: "That's it?" Captain Stupendous had a few laughs but after a few pages the jokes started getting stale. It lacked a real plot and had no character development to speak of. Unfortunately, the whole thing was a bit of a let-down and I can't really recommend it unless you're such a huge Zach Weiner fan that you want to buy it just to support him. Hopefully he'll learn from this mistake and go one to write something truly awesome, but in the meantime I'll just continue reading SMBC and pretend that Captain Stupendous didn't happen.

From the brilliant minds of SMBC comes a hilarious comic. But its more than just a comic. It is pure hilarity and comedic genius.

Like most of the reviewers, I bought this book to support my favorite web comic, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (smbc-comics.com). If I hadn't, I would probably have given this book 5 stars, but I was expecting it to be as witty, insightful, and over-the-top as the comic I read every morning.

It's not. It's a book of jokes about superheroes who are also sleazy. Make no mistake, this book is funny. But it's JUST funny. SMBC is brilliant.
