Mance Lipscomb was one of Arhoolie's Chris Strachwitz's greatest finds out there in Navasota, Texas. He was 65 years old when he made his first recordings for Arhoolie in 1960, and cut hundreds of titles, many of which are still unissued, in the next 9 years (he died in 1976). Mance was a country blues performer of exceptional talent, and included all kinds of songs in his repertory: traditional blues, rags, minstrel songs, gospel, country tunes, guitar solos. This third volume continues the excellence of the first two. Mance had a smooth, clear voice that was a pleasure listening to. A real treat on this CD is a non-musical item, SEGREGATION DONE PAST, which has Mance telling a couple of stories of Jim Crow/Crow Jim life in Texas. A most enjoyable CD; a real country blues fan's delight.

After finding a magazine article profiling Mance Lipscomb, I set out in search of one of his recordings, and found Captain, Captain. At first I was transported back in time to the early 30's in the heart of the Miss. delta region. The cuts, are poorly mastered resulting in poorer reproduction, but the result is a deeply soulful feeling. One filled with the pain and strife of a local cotton sharecropper. I think Mance's influence has traversed geographical borders, and can be heard in the 1970's Isreali folk albums recorded by Adam Rosenblum. Some of his work dealing with Kibutz life, and the olive harvest is reminsient of the american delta blues singers. In short from the standpoint of blues scholar or blues fan, Captain Captian completes a void in most collections.

It is hard to explain the feeling of listening to pure, basic blues, without letting oneself enter a period of instant,..well for lack of a better word.."blues". I was delighted to listen to this recording by Mance. In his early days, he would play 3-4 hour sets at a small club called the "Junkyard", owned by the now infamous Chicago financier Mark Horowitz. The guitarsmanship displayed during those performances have been transported directly onto this recording. Run, don't walk, to add this to your collection.
