Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-This installment in the dependably goofy series picks up with George and Harold, who have been wrongfully accused of crimes committed by their evil twins, now in juvie. However, they soon travel back in time to kindergarten, courtesy of the troublemaking Tippy Tinkletrousers. Their biggest issue now is that they are stuck as kindergarteners and they don't have Captain Underpants to save them from Kipper Krupp, the sixth-grade bully. Will they be able to beat him on their own? Pilkey holds true to the formula his readers love, with clever cartoons throughout the book and plenty of humor. In spite of the fact that this is a very silly book, Pilkey does also manage to include some anti-bullying messages. It's sure to be a hit with beginning chapter-book readers, particularly fans of the series.-Elizabeth Swistock, Jefferson Madison Regional Library, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. [STARRED REVIEW]

Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers

Dav Pilkey. Scholastic, $9.99 (304p) ISBN 978-0-545-17534-0

A toast of “non-alckaholick wine” to the ninth Captain Underpants novel—and to Dav Pilkey’s refusal to coast. In fact, the title is something of a red herring since the true centerpiece of this installment is a lengthy flashback to “exactly five years, eleven days, fourteen hours, and six minutes ago,” when mopey kindergartner Harold Hutchins first met precocious George Beard, who sports an awesome Afro instead of his usual flattop.
The boys face a nasty nemesis in the form of Kipper Krupp, the bullying sixth-grade nephew of Principal Krupp, but since Principal Krupp is years away from becoming the world’s greatest superhero, it’s up to the boys to defeat Kipper on their own. Their intricate and ingenious plan incorporates (and this is a short list) locker sabotage, fear of the paranormal, cheerleaders, pizza deliveries, a huge pair of pants, and the creation of the seminal comic “The Advenchers of Dogman.” Pilkey dials back the toilet humor considerably, but plenty of naughtiness is still afoot (there’s an extended riff on the hilarity of turning a “Brake Inspection” sign into “Bra Inspection”), and egregious misspellings abound. Supa! Ages 7–up. (Aug.)

Dav Pilkey delivers another fun-filled story in the ninth Captain Underpants novel. In this funny adventure, the boys have no choice but to face Kipper Krupp, the big bully, on their own. Tormented by Kipper in the past, the boys create a clever plan to defeat the bully, and this plan is filled with many unexpected upcoming events to finally seek revenge. 'Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers' will have any child laughing-out-loud as it entertains throughout. A triumph in this hilarious series, enjoyable, and Recommended for young readers!

After being bugged for a couple of weeks, it finally arrived, the end of august, after just being published. This book must be good! My son finished it the same day when it arrived, and is reading it again, the next day. It seems like fun to read, and interesting by the pictures of the book. When you love your kids, and they are interested in reading, get it!

Every Captain Underpants book is called an "epic novel", well, this time Pilkey has certainly presented fans with "the" Epic Captain Underpants novel. It is huge for a start (over 300 pages) and the plot is so convoluted it contains about three stories in one! This has got to be the best book in the entire series and I've already read book 10, but this one makes me want to read #10 again just to follow what happens next. After six years between books 8 & 9 being published, Pilkey put everything he had into this book; it is absolutely hilarious. Taking us into a future that was meant to be, a future that could have been and the one that really happened. We also go way back to when George and Harold were in kindergarten and first met. The majority of the book takes place within this storyline and is fantastic! I just loved it!

More of the usual hilarity with a surprisingly subversive message for the older crowd sometimes. Pilkey uses a fair number of large words in this volume--refreshing that he doesn't talk down to kids, you know?--and I love how he repeatedly compares life in prison to everyday life in school. The book also contains great lines like the following: "He proudly bragged about his great humility, confessed his intense hatred of intolerant people, and spoke for hours about his legendary brevity." And the illustrations do their own part in moving our heroes along, and they're similarly full of goofy messages. (At one point the text points out that a store is having its Annual Lazy Storytelling Sale as a quick way to get a cape onto the superhero.)

I also love that the time-traveling hijinks allowed us to "go back in time" and see how George and Harold met! I especially love precocious George, who wears a tie and rescues Harold from bullies. I also have to say it's wonderful that an adult writer remembers how the world seems to children--big people have all the power, and they use it unfairly, and seem to delight in kids' sorrow even though most mainstream narratives insist that all adults want what's best for kids unless they're monsters. There are a lot of everyday monsters out there, and it's perfectly common for those to be adult bullies in kids' lives--their teachers, their trusted adults who believe nasty people's "side" over theirs, the random grown-ups who don't stop injustices because they think kids are "learning their lesson" or taking deserved hard knocks. But kids often have a strong sense of justice, and all this teaches them is that adults can be jerks too.

The book itself is as good (or as bad) as the rest in the series. Son loves it (as he does the res of the titles). It is somewhat in poor taste, but rather funny. It is annoying, though, that the title is only available for Kindle for Samsung (as opposed to Kindle Fire). Therefore,I bought it, but I cannot sync the library throughout different devices (my son has to read the book on my phone, as opposed to his own tablet). This is particularly baffling since other books by this author (e.g. Super Diaper Baby) published by the same press, do not have this sync issue.
