A Semi-Satisfying Greatest Hits Collection, December 23, 2001
This review is from: Captain's Best: Best Hits and New Songs (Audio CD)
When I heard that Captain Jack had released a greatest hits compilation called "Captain's Best", I wondered just how many "hits" he and his trusty female vocalist have had over the years. To my surprise, he actually has quite a few. In this best-of collection, we get treated to Captain Jack's most popular hits, as well as a slew of new and lesser-known tracks. In my opinion, Captain Jack has always been insanely inconsistent. Some of his songs are true Euro-dance gems, while others are ear-popping military chants with barely-there club beats. With "Captain's Best", there is the lineup of his well-liked hits such as CAPTAIN JACK(#1), TOGETHER AND FOREVER(#2), "IKO IKO(#4), GET UP(#13), SOLDIER SOLDIER(#14) and LITTLE BOY(#15). The album is definitely worth it if only for these and others great songs. For moderate Captain Jack fans, buying this album will save you the trouble of trying to locate and purchase his others. Other songs on here that I really like are U LIKE IT(#20) and YELLOW SUBMARINE(#21). U LIKE IT is your classic Euro-dance sound. It is a song I had never heard before, so I don't if it's a new one or an old one, but it is one of his best. YELLOW SUBMARINE is a slight dance version of the famous song by The Beatles. I really like it; although fans of the original may feel that Captain Jack's just doesn't measure up to the feel of The Beatles. Tragic misses on this collection are HOLIDAY(#12), an unbelievably awful and unnecessary cover of the 1983 Madonna song, and SAY CAPTAIN - SAY WOT(#19). I don't even know what to say about how irritating the latter one is - you just have to hear for yourselves. It is just a serious mistake that makes no sense. Overall, this is a great greatest hits album - and I believe it is only a Japanese release, so it is pricey and rare. You should definitely get your hands on it while you can.

GREAT CD, August 17, 2004
This review is from: Captain's Best: Best Hits and New Songs (Audio CD)
To tell you the truth there are only two groups from Europe that I like. One is the 4 Strings and the other is Captain Jack!!
Captain Jack's music is both refreshing and has a great beat. Some of my personal favorite songs on this CD are "Say Captain Say Wot", "Dream a Dream", "In the Navy '99", and "My Generation". I like these song the most because they are great to dance to and you can tell that they are no computer edited.
Captain Jack has a nack for being inconsistant. Some times he puts out dance songs, some time he puts out Euro-pop songs, and sometimes he is singing a song as if he was in the military (which he was). However, I like the diversity of CJ. This album is great because it is not devoted to just one type of music. Euro-pop, Dance, and Military songs are all on this CD making it a diverse CD with several song styles instead of just one.
The only downside is the price! Because CJ's CDs are imports, they are very expensive. If you buy them from amazon you could pay $40 for one CD. If you want to avoid the high price, I suggest that you buy a used or new.
Anyway, this is a great CD and will remain so for a long time.

A Lot Better Than OK, December 30, 2001
This review is from: Captain's Best: Best Hits and New Songs (Audio CD)
I just recently started listening to Captain Jack myself and I say what others call inconsistencsy I call talent. He obviously has a lot a talent to be able to crank out so much variety of dance music. From ONLY YOU to 1-2-3 to U LIKE IT to GET UP and IKO IKO, he shows that theres no limit to his variety and creativity. That's something I really appreciate in any artist. Just having the same style over and over again would get really old really fast. Most people will know the more familiar songs like TOGETHER & FOREVER, CAPTAIN JACK and IN THE NAVY from the Dance Dance series. I admit HOLIDAY and "SAY WOT" aren't great, but the TAKE ON ME cover is pretty nice. Out of all his CDs I own, this one is my favorite. If you're thinking of trying out Captain Jack, I recommend you get this CD first. You'll hear all the "classics" plus many other songs that show how many ways this talented artist can make you dance. A must-buy for any Captain Jack fan. Definitely worth the money. Also, if you can find it, get the "full" version of DANCING POMPOKOLIN. GREAT STUFF!!!
