Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sharp tactical plotting, hazardous cross-country travel and a dash of sardonic humor mark Butcher's fourth Codex Alera novel (after 2006's Cursor's Fury). Two years into a difficult campaign against the wolflike Canim invaders, Calderon legion captain Tavi is saddled with an unqualified but politically powerful superior whose plans threaten disaster and force Tavi into potential treason. Meanwhile, aging ruler Gaius Sextus plans a final strike against the rebellious lord of Kalare, but to get close enough to act, he must set aside his power to control the elements and make a painful overland slog that neatly challenges genre conventions. Butcher deftly deploys intrigue, conflicted loyalties and hairbreadth action to excellent effect. Few writers balance military realism and cinematic swashbuckling with so much skill or wit. Series fans will welcome the revelation of Tavi's long-secret heritage and the strong climaxes resolving most of the immediate conflicts, while newcomers will have no trouble navigating the well-developed landscape. More About the Author

Jim Butcher read his first fantasy novel when he was seven years old--
the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. By the time he turned eight,
he'd added the rest of the Narnia books, the Prydain Chronicles, every
book about Star Wars he could find, a great many Star Trek novels and
the Lord of the Rings to his count.

So he was pretty much doomed from the start.

Love of fantasy, his personal gateway drug, drew him toward a fairly
eclectic spread of interests: horseback riding (including trick riding,
stunt riding, drill riding, and competitive stunt racing), archery,
martial arts, costuming, music and theater. He played a lot of role-
playing games, a lot of fantasy-based tactical computer games, and
eventually got into live-action roleplay where players beat each other
up with boffer weapons.

So, really, he can fly his nerd flag with pretty much anyone, and
frequently does.

He took up writing to be able to produce fantasy novels with swords and
horses in them, and determinedly wrote terrible fantasy books until,
just to prove a point to his writing teacher, he decided to take every
piece of her advice; fill out outlines and worksheets, and design
stories and characters just the way she'd been telling him to do for
about three years. He was certain that once she saw what hideous art it
produced, she would be proven wrong and repent the error of her ways.
The result was the Dresden Files, which sure showed *her*.

She has not yet admitted her mistake and recanted her philosophy on
writing.

Jim has performed in dramas, musicals, and vocal groups in front of
live audiences of thousands and on TV. He has performed exhibition
riding in multiple arenas, and fallen from running horses a truly
ridiculous number of times. He was once cursed by an Amazon witch
doctor in rural Brazil, has apparently begun writing about himself in
the third person, and is hardly ever sick at sea.

He also writes books occasionally.

Jim stands accused of writing the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera.
He's plead insanity, but the jury is still out on that one. He lives in
Missouri with his wife, romantic suspense and paranormal romance writer
Shannon K. Butcher (who is really pretty and way out of his league),
his son, and a ferocious guard dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another satisfying and enjoyable instalment in the Alera series, December 4, 2007
By
Its been two years since the events in Cursor's Fury and Tavi is still Captain of the First Aleran and fighting against the Canim in a campaign that seems no closer to finishing. When an ambitious Senator hatches a plan to end the war that Tavi knows will only cause disaster he is forced into desperate measures to salvage what he can out of the coming storm.

I really enjoyed this novel. It's not a place holder story, but rather a turning point in the series. Many questions from the previous books in the series are finally answered and in many ways Tavi comes into is own. For me, I find I'm looking forward to the Alera books more than the Dresden books by the same author these days. This series is one in which the main characters have really grown over the course of the storyline. Its not padded out excessively and is continuing to move in a satisfying direction and I'm looking forward, yet again, to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Butcher delivers again!, December 7, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I first learned of this series while reading a 'Dresden Files' adventure by the same author. I was put off by the shameless plug the author included as a note to readers of Harry Dresden. Nonetheless, I picked up the first book in the Codex Alera series and I've never been disappointed.

Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4) starts a couple years after Book 3. The familiar cast of characters is now firmly established, and the building confrontation with the Canim finally takes center stage. This book is not, however, merely an extension of the Cursor's Fury plot lines. The main protagonist, Tavi, learns the truth behind his own origin and I was left enormously satisfied with the state of this main plotline by the end of the book. Fans who, like me, have enjoyed the quiet-yet-brooding Emperor will see some stunning displays of power and fury.

As stated by another reviewer, there are a number of pivotal points that take the narrative in exciting directions. Unlike Terry Goodkind or the late, lamented Robert Jordan, Jim Butcher seems to have no problem moving forward. While this series promises to be at least as prolific as the Sword of Truth or the Wheel of Time, it suffers from none of the aimlessness or occaisional 'wasted' book that both of those worlds have suffered.

Brilliant. Focused. An excellent book to buy and an outstanding series for newcomers.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't put it down!, December 10, 2007

Jim Butcher is on to something. He's managed to start another series separate from Harry Dresden yet make it just as good if not better. I love the novels so much, I can't even wait for it to get into paperback. And this was well worth it!

This is the 4th installment of the Codex Alera novels. The story picks up 2 years after the events of the last novel and does not slow down at all. I've got to say that even when you think you might see how JB is going to take a plot thread from start to finish, it's an enjoyable read to see how he gets you there.

Lots of character development, lots of great characters, some monsters thrown in the mix and lots of action. There wasn't a dull section in the book. A definite find! Highly endorsed.
