"Captiva"-ted my attention,
By ZJJ (Columbia, MD USA) - See all my reviews

I only heard a few songs from Falling from their first 2 albums. I actually first heard of them when I just purchased "Exit Lights" on a whim. It totally blew me away, and although the titles do get crazy, the lyrics do have meaning. Are these people really Christian music artists?
So what's the verdict on Captiva? It's a blend of Exit Lights and their first two albums in a way. I can't stop playing it over and over again. The guitar. The sounds. Everything. And most importantly, the lyrics. My favorite is "Good Morning Planetarium" along with "Maps" and "How They Made Cameras" as far as lyrics are concerned. The first track though really just grabs you. The tunes do remind me of the current alternative/rock bands out there, but Falling Up is totally on a different level as those bands.

what does Captiva mean?,

question: how can you make an album to top Dawn Escapes? "its not possable!" wrong. the first time I listened to Captive, I wasn't sure what to think. the second time, I loved it. its much quieter then the previous 3, but thats expected, given that there's two less members to the band. my personal favorite song is "How They Made Cameras" it sounds more like Dawn Escapes. the guitar on "Hotel Aquarium" is awsome, and the vocals on "The Dark Side of Indoor Track Meets" are INCREDIBLE. at first, I wasn't too sure about "Goodnight Gravity" as it honestly reminded me of some thing Reliant K would come out whith. but after a few listens, it grew on me. all in all, the album is full of beautiful lyrics, spot on vocals, electronic awsome-ness (complaments to Exit Lights)and melodic piano. once again Falling Up proves themselves as one of the greatest bands to ever bless the ears of the world. ever.

Falling Up Is Still Excellent, But Sadly Not "As" Excellent,
This review is from: Captiva (Audio CD)
Well, there was a time when Falling Up was hands down the best christian rock band to be found. They combied thought provoking lyrics with jazz fusion beats and ferocious guitars. That Falling Up, sadly, appears to be gone. Instead we are treated (and it is a treat) to a set of radio gems with very poetic lyrics and melodies that will stick in your head for days. If you're looking for a brand of Falling Up that's abandoned hard rock for punk pop this is massively entertaining release your sure to enjoy. As for me, I'll pray Falling Up brings some of their original style back, and until then enjoy TFK as the new best christian rock band.
PS This really is a very good CD for the genre! : )

I already had a slight idea of what I was getting into as i've purchased both of their cds & remix album Exit Lights. But i was completely blown away by Captiva...i heard "Hotel Aquarium" on their Myspace page and i was like excellent...they are back again with a style that while familiar. Will be completely different to both old and new fans of Falling Up. But that still didnt prepare me for the whole cd with excellent track after excellent track. Falling Up not only delivers a smash hit but they do this while doing their music, their way and continue to drawn in new fans.
Highlight tracks: Hotel Aquarium A Guide To Marine Life Helicopters Mars How They Made Cameras Goodnight Gravity Good Morning Planetarium Murexa A worthy purchase and addition to anyone's cd collection whether a fan or not. Captiva will drawn you in and make you its "captive" audience as well. Bravo!!

This album is very artistic, with good messages inside. I love the mixing of the ethereal instrumentalism with the down to earth messages.

This is one of my favorite Falling Up albums. It is excellent. Their earlier works (Crashings and Dawn Escapes) seemed a little sloppy to me. There wasn't much of a distinct sound nor structure. Captiva starts taking a different turn and shows a lot of maturity from the band. The songs have great hooks yet provide enough depth that they hold your attention for many listens. The first two songs are the best and hard to stop listening to. The album slumps slightly for a couple of songs in the middle but picks up for a strong finish. I highly recommend buying this album.

If you've already heard Falling Up's past albums, you know that you're guaranteed not to be disappointed by anything they put out. This album has some definite anthems for anyone who loves music with heart and passion.Falling Up are just one of those rare bands that know how to make extremely good music. I know a band is good when they can create music so powerful it brings tears to my eyes. Best songs on this album are Hotel Aquarium,Captiva (possibly one of my all-time favorite songs),How They Made Cameras,Good Morning Planetarium, and Arch to Achilles.

In 2004, rockers Falling Up found immediate success with their first debut album release of Crashings. Fans clamored about how they out "Linkin Parked" mainstream artist Linkin Park in similar musical styling and won the fans hearts. Since then the band, with two more releases under them (Dawn Escapes and the remix of their own tunes as well as Exit Lights, both with equal success) are back with Captiva. Since their origin, Falling Up has changed their line up more than they have their socks, but this latest release hasn't faltered for it. At times it can be confusing with new and old band members coming and going, but Falling Up holds strong with the three remaining band members. 2007 brought quite a few new artists to the Christian scene and even amongst those releases Captiva stands out as a respective leader in their genre.
Beware, you may be disappointed in Captiva's new sound. Fans looking for another staple in Falling Up's breakout history might not find it here. As always though, these guys still know how to rock out. Such is so on tracks like, "Goodnight Gravity", the already acclaimed "Hotel Aquarium", and "Murexa". The rest of the album definitely has a slower, more dreamer feel. Even a few tracks seem as though they belong in a movie soundtrack and quite possible could. The new sound is mature but moving, with each part fitting together equally, but not overdone. Captiva takes some getting used to, but it begins to grow on you as lead singer Jessy Ribordy's voice carries the album's momentum very well. His lyrics cry out the love our Savior has for us and is unafraid to declare His name. That is something always good to hear. Yes, Falling Up's sound is a step in a different direction for the band, yet maybe it's a longer stride then the band expected. I am excited to see where Captiva takes them in their sound and style on the band's next release. |
