I was caught up in the lives of the characters. I found myself laughing, then crying! The passion, (not just physical), between "Lizzy" and "Lord John Black" was well written. The reader is able to feel their happiness and sorrow. A truly wonderful book to read. Doris Copeland (Darcy1963@aol.com

Lizzie Matthews is an unconventional, independent minded American who rarely got beyond the abrasive stage with this reader. She was narrow minded, arrogant and reckless.

Her love interest is Lord John Black, a British Earl who spies her as she is emerging from a swim in the ocean. He discovers that she is the granddaughter of his step father and staying for an extended visit at her grandfather's house in England prompting Jack to prolong his visit with his step father.

Lizzie despises the English aristocracy and lets Lord John know it instantly by being rude and condescending, traits she accuses the aristocracy of constantly. She believes in the American independence not because of fair representation for taxation or the right to self govern but because America has no class system, I guess she forgot about slavery and the wealthy land and business owners throughout the colonies who were not sitting down to tea with barmaids and laborers. I am an American and found her ideas not quite thought out. I usually cheer a lot for an independent minded American but Lizzie came off as willful.

Lizzie rifles through her grandfather's desk, he has some connection to the foreign office, and finds any scrap of info about troops and passes it to revolutionaries in England. With communication taking weeks and sometimes months by sea by time the information reached the colonists it would probably be a bit old. She never takes into account how her actions will affect her grandfather or that she is betraying his trust.

Jack loves her despite her willfulness and almost tricks her into an engagement with him. Her grandfather is ecstatic but Lizzie is horrified at the thought of actually marrying a peer. She constantly tells Jack he is no gentleman but she rarely acts like a lady. Jack comes across as rather weak willed and in some ways just unable to match Lizzie's strong personality.

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story was absolutley a good read. I hope I see more from this author in the future!!!1
