Series: Black Lace | Publication Date: April 22, 2010
A historical tale set in the decadent splendor of a North African mansion. Nineteenth-century French convent girls Marietta and Claudine discover that their handsome host’s invitation to stay in his exotic palace requires something in return: submitting to the ecstasy of pleasure in pain.
Cleo Cordel is one of the original “Black Lace Divas” whose erotic novels were repeatedly reprinted throughout the 90s. She went on to write fantasy novels, and now writes books under other names. She lives in London.
This is a far better-than-average erotic adventure set in that ever-popular exotic location: the harem. What sets this book apart is the quality of writing by author Cleo Cordell, and the emphasis on the psychological reactions of the heroine to her situation. The man who has imprisoned her sets out to seduce her rather than simply overpower her, and in fact the two never have intercourse in this story. Which is not to say there's not a lot of sexual tension, sensual delights, and a few sex scenes. . . . but Cordell is aiming for a different kind of impact than what is provided by a more traditional novel of sex-scene after sex-scene. I highly recommend this book if the subtleties of dominance and submission are a turn-on.

This book had some really good scenes and reminded me of the Beauty series by Anne Rice. It was a good story line without too much story in between scenes. I did end up going back to this one a few times and had a few favorite sections.
