Matsuri Hino, already well-known in America for her gothic romance manga Vampire Knight, tells a different sort of love story in Captive Hearts. Long ago, 20-year-old Megumi Kuroishi’s ancestor stole a sacred scroll from the Kogami family, and the Kuroishi family has been cursed ever since to work as servants to the Kogamis. Now, in modern times, Megumi falls in love with the latest Kogami, Suzuka, and will do anything, absolutely anything, to serve her. His slavish devotion makes one wonder if it is the curse or his real feelings. This amusing setup is obviously directed at a female readership who would love to have a boy so devoted to them. And while the premise strives to be silly and out of this world, Captive Hearts does have its share of serious moments, especially toward the end of the volume, as Suzuka recalls being kidnapped as a young girl. While it may not feature the undead, the presence of interesting curses should help this manga appeal to Vampire Knight fans. Grades 8-11. --Danica Davidson

I like the series, but its a bit confusing. I was flipping back and forth, thinking, "Did I skip a page?"

The characters are sweet, but there isn't a lot of development of Megumi and Suzuka's relationship in the first book. The second book is a bit better. The series seems rushed at parts.

Although slightly confusing and a bit fast in the flow of the romance, its a cute romance story that I'd recommend.

I bought Captive Hearts because I had read some of the authors other works (Wanted, Vampire Knights) - Captive Hearts is by far my favorite! Matsuri Hino's artistry is beautiful as always. A great light read when you need some laughter.

This time around we get to see a bit more of Megumi, the boy cursed to be a servant, and Suzuka, the girl cursed in turn to be his mistress. Unlike the first volume this is only the "Captive Hearts" story though it is still a bit disjointed at parts and characters can suddenly appear without warning. Here were are introduced to three new characters that may return -- a young wealthy hire who wants Suzuka's hand in marriage, his own servant who is also a descendant of the Kogami clan and thus able to command Megumi, and Megumi's mother who since she is not a blood relative is free from the servile curse. It gets unnecessarily complicated by the introduction of some plots involving kidnappings and slave dealings years ago but I'm still a sucker for the mistress-slave genre in this series.
