4.0 out of 5 stars Captive Innocence, June 19, 2005
This review is from: Captive Innocence (Mass Market Paperback)
I began reading this thinking it was part of the Captive Series. It has completely different characters, so I checked Fern Michaels' website; it is not.

About four paragraphs into the first chapter, I thought, "This is familiar. I know I read this book." When I finished the first chapter, I checked out "Pride and Passion." Sure enough, it is the same story!!! The main character, Royall Banner's name is changed and she is a widow instead of an innocent teenager, but other than that it is exactly the same story.

I did read the book through. It is a good read, great story, kept me interested, not too much boring detail.

"Captive Innocence" gives more background info on the characters than "Pride and Passion." I'd definitely recommend either of these books. I'd probably recommend "Captive Innocence" over "Pride and Passion."

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, original, captivating!, September 28, 2008
This review is from: Captive Innocence (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a very refreshing story of a young widow who comes to Brazil in order to take over a plantation she inherited from her father. In a festival in Rio de Janeiro, she encounters a handsome stranger and spends a passionate night in his arms. Later it turns out that this stranger is her neighbor who hates the co-owner of her plantation because of the deplorable conditions in which the slaves on their plantation live. Throughout the story Royall tries to prove that she cares about the people who work on her plantation and that she is a kind, and not a cruel person.
I absolutely loved Royall. She was very strong, determined, confident, ready to stand up for herself and for the things that were important to her. Maybe she was a bit too beautiful, but I loved it that they called her the `golden girl'.
Sebastian (I love that name!) was also great, although I didn't get to know him as mush as Royall. I didn't like it that he still slept with his mistress after he met and slept with Royall. Not very tasteful. And I believe that they could get together a bit earlier in stead of being so stubborn and staying apart because of insecurities and lack of communication. They had a great chemistry, though, and sparks were flying whenever they were together.
The secondary characters - Mrs. Quince, Baron, Alicia, Aloni, Carl, Elena, Jamie and las ninas, were all well written and felt alive.
Although this book dragged a bit in the end, it still had me captivated, therefore I give it five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading, August 2, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Captive Innocence (Mass Market Paperback)
The book is fairly easy reading and entertaining. You want to hate the Baron and wish you had someone like Senor Rivera. I have been to Manaus, Brazil and it's like the book describes. It's a nice book to read.
