3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Greatest Thriller Movie, December 2, 2010
This review is from: Captives (Amazon Instant Video)
Well, to start off with, this is definitely a thriller mystery movie. If you're looking for copious amounts of gore, violence and nudity, stop reading and don't watch this movie.
The movie makes an earnest effort to bring back the classic thriller mystery. With that said, there is a large amount of improvement that could have been done. The plot is actually solid. Two couples meet by accident (one couple is on vacation and their car breaks down in front of the other couple's house). They get to talking over dinner about what would make life interesting, and come up with the idea that breaking the law brings the most thrills. This launches a moral dilemma of a crime in which no one gets hurt, and they decide that kidnapping with both parties' consent is ideal, but leave it as just a discussion. Later on, the "boring" couple calls the "interesting" couple to ask them to kidnap them. Then the kidnapping goes awry...
They fragment and mix the plot in a Pulp Fiction/grindhouse fashion, but don't do it in a way that is interesting. It actually distracts from the plot in the beginning of the movie, but gets better at the end. But the main distraction is the acting. The acting is pretty poor, so I wasn't able to get into the movie as much, and it detracted from any character development. I think, in some cases, the same actor acted differently in different parts of the movie.
Overall, I'd say it's an OK movie. If you have to make a choice, rent instead of buying. While the acting could use improvement, the director put forth a good effort and, with a solid plot backing, made a thriller-mystery that is better than the typical horror/slasher movie.
