Unsuspectingly good, wanted to hate the Hero from his role in previous book but can't help appreciate the reform and change of heart. Not so perfect heroine, not exactly strong but not weak either. Liked the couple, liked the plot.

Loved the hero in this book, he was very enigmatic. Loved the fact that the heroine was her own person.

I always had a thing for Loretta's books, and this one is no exception. Intense, passion filled, with twists and turns - even more so, when the couple are trying to solve a murder mystery of the heroine's deceased husband. Whom, by the way, is a sorry ass and a criminal bastard in love with his own wife without being able to reach through to her, mainly because of his inability to satisfy her needs and at the same time his many pursuits of wild and reckless infidelities.

To write down the plot for this book would simply take too much time, I have to say that either you love L.C or you don't. If you do, this book is worth it - if not, well, read it anyway, since the plot is very nicely constructed for a romance novel. The tension, the passion, the intensity... oh my gosh :-)

This is one of Loretta Chase' s earlier novels. It was well written as always by her. The main characters were interesting and entertaining.
I like her later novels better, personally. I felt there were too many secondary characters to keep up with.
I felt the secondary characters were too distracting. The love story was wonderful though and I really enjoyed the book. It just took me awhile to muddle through.
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy historical romance. But I would also recommend her recent books more!

I'm a Loretta Chase fan ever since I read "Lord Of Scoundrels" although reading the back story of the Beaumonts and Esmond was interesting the pacing was too slow. There was some wonderful bits of dialogue throughout the book. Chase' work never lacks for the sharp wit and occasional humour but uncovering the mystery of the main character's past just took too long. By the time we got there I just didn't care anymore. Bravo though for the happy ending for everyone except of course for the villain. That being said, I'm still a fan and recommend the book.

This is my favorite book by Loretta Chase. I love the romance , the settings ,the suspense, the heroine , the hero, just everything about this book. This is what romance is about. The heroine is an adult and behaves like one I really liked that . I loved the hero he was not perfect the two together made for a sumptuous romance that I will be re reading many times, truly what I look for in a romance novel . A book for grownups it is simply perfect.

Such an unusual love story. Not a forumla historical romance story. The story, the characters, the twists and turns. Hard to put down and sorry whenit ended.

So nice to not have the sterotypical English lord as the hero of this novel. I like the flawed natures of the Leila and Esmond make them a bit more real. The mystery draws you in and reveals itself slowly and is not so over the top not to be believeable. I am becoming a big fan of Ms. Chase's writing as I can count on a book with well developed characters who intrigue me.

I couldn't wait to get this book, but it was out of print. It was one of the reasons I got a kindle for christmas.

I had read all of the other books that were linked to this one, and absolutely loved them, I liked this book

but not on the same level as the others.

I'm still glad I got to read it

Susan
