Very basic, but informative and includes nice examples, April 27, 2009
This review is from: Capture the Portrait: How to Create Great Digital Photos (Paperback)
This is an easy to read, conversational book aimed at the amateur who is interesting in improving his/her portrait photography. The book includes lots of photographs, including some before/after/correct/incorrect examples. While there are a few paragraphs dedicated to SLRs, this book will be very relevant to point-and-shoot users who want to get better pictures of their families and friends. I learned a number of very useful ideas that I expect to help me in the future.
There are ten chapters, including:
"Portrait Basics" - eye level, fill the frame, etc...,
"Composition" - rule of thirds, horizon line, tilting the frame, framing,etc...
"Light and Portraits" - direction of light, hard/soft lighting, color of light, etc...
"Portrait Styles" - Candids, slice of life, funny faces, props, etc...
"Posing" - Body position, hands, eye contact, groups, etc...
"Image Processing Software" - red eye reduction, sharpening, color correction, cropping, etc....
While I would have preferred a little more meat, all in all I found this book worth reading.

I've purchased 3 of these books. Two were gifts and one for myself. Guess that speaks volumes in and of itself!

Nice Idea book and Basic How To..., April 6, 2009
This review is from: Capture the Portrait: How to Create Great Digital Photos (Paperback)
Simply put, I like this book for its simplicity and the examples of work the author puts forth. I am a mere novice, looking to improve my photography skills when it comes to including people. This book is not really in depth, but since I am more of a visual learner, it appealed to me with its use of examples.
