5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Live Journey Album and Possibly Best Live Album Ever
While I may have owned Live in Houston and Greatest Hits Live before grabbing this one, I kind of didn't want it because it was pre-Escape material that wasn't interesting to me and I couldn't find it. One day at a mega CD store I came across it and bought it. I listened to it through and through and found that it was pretty good. Like Live In Houston, Steve Perry seems...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good album, but not essential.
Nothing special here. This is just a collection of performances from the band's 1980 Departure tour-their last with founding member Gregg Rolie. The last track, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" is a studio track.
You should get Steve Perry's first three albums with Journey first (Infinity, Evolution, and Departure) before even considering this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Live Journey Album and Possibly Best Live Album Ever, June 9, 2009
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
While I may have owned Live in Houston and Greatest Hits Live before grabbing this one, I kind of didn't want it because it was pre-Escape material that wasn't interesting to me and I couldn't find it. One day at a mega CD store I came across it and bought it. I listened to it through and through and found that it was pretty good. Like Live In Houston, Steve Perry seems to get involved with the audience quite a bit like during Wheel in the Sky after the my, my, my part he then yells "YOU'RE ON YOU'RE OWN!!!" and the audience yells "FOR TOMORROW!!!" I just love when musicians get into their performances. The album features all the big hits from Infinity, Evolution, and Depature such as "Feeling That Way", "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", and "Walks Like a Lady" along with a new live song called "Dixie Highway" and the lone studio recording which to me should have been on either Departure or Escape, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)". Obviously Steve Perry was not only Journey's best vocalist ever, but he was also the most entertaining by using his audience to sing along and to fill in songs as well as tell jokes and stories about the songs he sings. I've never seen or heard any other band use the audience as a performance tool. So if you're a Journey fan or someone who likes live albums...this one's the best by far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live Journey, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)

My biggest complaint with most live albums is that the songs sound almost nothing like the original studio versions. Some people say that that is the point: live music is different in that it interprets the studio version into its own form. I can follow that as long as the song does not become unrecognizable from its original form. Captured is a two-fold joy. None of the Journey songs in their "live" form become unrecognizable from their studio form. Are they different? In some ways, yes. Steve Perry does a little add-libbing to personalize the songs to the audience and to address the audience. This does nothing to detract from the music. The introductions of the band members and their respective solos not only do not detract but add to the quality of the music. I would consider these elements absolutely must-haves for any Journey fan. Also the quality of the recording of these live performances is extraordinary. No part of the band drowns out the other and none of the performances are overshadowed by the audience until Steve asks them to sing. The sound quality of the album is great and highly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, a great CD all around., July 17, 2007

All I can say is that I wish I had been able to see Journey perform live. What a band! They sound wonderful and for the people like me, it's a taste of what it must have been like to be in a Journey concert back in the early 80's. The songs, the music, and THE VOICE...STEVE PERRY. It's just great live music. I thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Live Album's Ever!, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to be at one of the concerts this album was recorded from in the early 80's. Every time I listen to this album I'm 18 years old again and all the old memories come back. This band sounded exactly the way they did on their albums - now dvd's. If you never were able to see them in concert (the original line up) then this is as close as you can get. I still remember Steve Perry holding the mic out to the audience during Wheel in the Sky and screaming the lyrics. It was the best. You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for any Journey fan, April 19, 2007
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
Don't listen to the guy who said this is not an essential album. That is simply not true. This is a great live album--the last with the great Greg Rolie in the lineup. If you want to talk about nonessential Journey albums they basically start after this one. Downhill from there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definetly Essential!!!, February 21, 2008

Yes like some others on here I feel this is an ESSENTIAL Journey to have in your collection! Anything Pre-"RAISED ON RADIO" IS ESSENTIAL!!!
I can't be 100% behind the production mix of this album..with alot of it sounding mixed in a mono type fashionand the audiance is up in the mix a bit to much..but the energy of the band is there. Also I wish when they would have rereleased it like the FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE Aniversary CD. With that Frampton made a 2 CD disc and inserted the "missing tracks" and put them in their original order they were performed in concert. Check out that CD here:
http://www.amazon.com/Frampton-Comes-Alive-Peter/dp/B000056JYC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203645005&sr=1-5

I feel Journey could have done this with CAPTURED. I have some live recordings from an FM broadcast that has ALL the missing songs that were omitted from CAPTURED and played in the original order, such as "Patiently", "Opened The Door", "Kohoutek", "Precious Time", "On A Saturday Nite", "Daydream" just to name a few.
UFO did the same as Frampton did with their "STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT" cd.
I NOT KNOCKING THIS CD...it just would be nice if all groups would do this with their Live albums..such as REO SPEEDWAGON with their live CD : "LIVE: YOU GET WHAT YOU PLAY FOR".

As a Personal Side Note::
When they were on this tour..they came to my town the night of my high school graduation (tour date May 22 1980 Cincinnati Ohio)..so unfortuantly I could not go. I ALWAYS will regret that night knowing now it would be the LAST time they would be in my area with Greg Rollie in the band and never seen them before I should have NOT gone to my graduation! I did catch them on the ESCAPE tour however..but its just not the same...

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Journey CD, September 27, 2011
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
Had this on 8 Track and wore it out. Now it's great to have the CD and here it clearly and powerful. Best live CD I think ever because of the intricate work that's put into their music. I really miss Steve Perry Journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album!!!!!!!, June 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is a great live album by Journey......I only got this CD at first because it was the only one that had "Dixie Highway" on it. But when I put this baby in my CD player and listened to it from beginning to end it was amazing. Listening to the way Steve interacts with the crowd makes you feel like you are there too, you are agreeing and enjoying yourself with him throughout the entire disc. Some of the songs even sound better live then the studio version. For those who missed out on seeing Journey live with Steve Perry, this CD is a great way to experience what it might have been like. This is a great addition to my collection and will a be a good one for you too. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonus Tracks?, April 8, 2011
By
Kevin Stafford (Rhode Island USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Captured (Dig) (Audio CD)
In short, where & what are the bonus tracks? I have the original first CD release with a total of 17 tracks. The Same as the Remastered that claims there are bonus tracks. Does Anyone have the extended version that could verify what the bonus tracks are or if this is an error I also have the 3CD "Time 3" box set and several cuts from Captured are included, sounding MUCH better remastered. Since I repurchased all the remastered discs that came out around the time "Trial By Fire" came out. Then I noticed... they got reissued again with bonus tracks! Now I can't by the catalog AGAIN!Then I realized I had the tracks on the "Time 3" box set.
Does anyone know if the first 3 albums (Journey, Look into The Future & Next) got remastered? I still think when Steve Perry had to leave the band due to sickness and exhaustion which effected his voice , They should have gotten Greg Rolie back. I didn't mind Augeri but adding Pineda was not the best idea. The guy doesn't write songs He does a good impression of Steve Perry, but singing the new songs from "Revelation" he had to sing the way HE THOUGHT Steve "would have" sung them and I think he missed the mark by miles! The ultimate fantasy is Steve Perry gets better and rejoins Journey. Then the band will be on the top again!
