A really underappreciated musician.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
This album must be THE ultimate bargain...Johnny Winter is as good as it gets, sort of Jimi Hendrix meets Eric Clapton. And this album is as good as HE gets. And his bandmates are of equal caliber (as Clapton's and Hendrix's were.) Good players don't overshadow each other; they help each other sound better. Folks today say, "Johnny Who?", while they listen to clone bands and prepackaged groups that neither write music nor play instruments. Winter deserves to be remembered as much as any great musician from the 60's and early 70's era. He deserves a biography on "Behind the Music" on VH-1. Pass the word around. He's the best-kept secret in music. Remember, this is a LIVE album, with flesh-and-blood musicians actually playing instruments, not computer-generated, synthesized sounds repeated every eight bars. This deserves 50 stars. Try it; you won't be disappointed. He has a lot of other good albums out, too, including a couple of other live ones.

SWEET,SWEET ROCK&ROLL!,
By
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
Just listend to this the other day! My God! What a great band! Saw Johnny live at Anaheim stadium on this tour. All copy songs! But,done like no one else can do 'em! As all the other reviewers state."Floyd Radford just smokes on the other guitar, not second guitar!" Johnny must have wanted a great rock band. Not just be a show off, himself! I'm always hearing about Johnny down playing his rock side. Trying to prove his true love for the blues! You want the blues? No problem! Side two is full of the most blistering blues this side of... If you can get STILL ALIVE AND WELL from 1973,And SAINTS&SINNERS also JOHN DAWSON WINTER III.from 1974. Then my friend you will have one of the greatest rock&roll collections of all time! But! CAPTURED LIVE!IS ONE MEAN MOTHER F#@CKER! Crank it up for all it's worth! 10 stars for Johnny!

Some great rock and roll guitar!,

This is not a very well known album, but it really showcases Johny Winter's talent. This was Johnny at his electric best. An added treat is Floyd Radford on second guitar. Floyd really blazes on Bony Morony. I had the chance to see this particular Johhny Winter band back in 1975 and they blew the house down. This album captures most of that spirit.

Great Live Blues-Rock,

This is one of the all-time great blues-rock albums. High-energy, scorching guitar from one of the best, in his prime. The frantic pace never lets up.

Jaw-dropping,

Johnny Winter is one of the most unknown of the late 1960's/1970's guitar heroes. He also happens to be one of the best, right up there with Cream-era Clapton, Hendrix, and Jimmy Page. This is a live album from 1976 and usually can be found for a pittance. I remember listening to my dad's copy on vinyl before he got the CD when I was a kid in the late 1980's and being amazed. EVERY ONE of these songs has some unreal guitar work from Johnny, and the tone he gets on his guitar is Hendrix taken to the extreme, in some cases. His bandmates are fantastic, as well. I can't recommend only one track or a couple on here...THEY ALL ROCK and they're all amazing. GET THIS ALBUM NOW!

Why aint there no more like him?,
By Barry Broersma (Nashville ,Tn.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to get this on vinyl in 71 or 72, when I picked up my 1st guitar. Still to this day I can listen to this on CD over and over again!Theres never been a blues guitarist like him before, or after. The guitar playing between Johnny and Floyd Ratford always seemed to compliment each other to an extreme. Truly amazing are the guitar solos being played at the same time , on top of each other, but without using harmony, yet blending and complimenting each others licks in 2 completely different styles, rather than trying to out do each other. The blues licks played on "Sweet Papa John" was and still is one of the hottest blues guitar examples of any age, and I still play licks from that song today. I know theres lots of inspirational bluesmen out there, SRV , Clapton,BB King,Freddie King,Buddy Guy...etc.. the list could go on forever. But that was truly the "hottest" blues playing that I have ever heard. If you find it ...BUY IT!! You'll treasure it forever!!!!

JW's Best Recording,
By A Customer
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
If you're just starting your Johnny Winter cd collection this is definitely the place to begin. There's not a lot of songs on this recording, but the ones that are feature JW at the peak of his career. I have listened to this disc no less than 1,000 times over the last 20 years. It still raises the hair on the back of my neck when he sings and plays Sweet Papa John. If you like absolute full-out jammin', emotional, awe-inspiring guitar music, do yourself a favor and buy this cd. The price is right and the music is right on!

This albumn changed my life!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
I was 12 years old when I heard this (in '78), and I went out and bought a guitar immediately! RIPPING GUITAR. I never heard SRV say that JW was an influence, which is a pity. Because he clearly did influence him. Johnny's artistry as a blues musician is possibly unmatched. And he never left behind his influences including including Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. The version of Highway 61 is reason enough to buy this CD - it just smokes. The arrangement of the tune is so damn dramatic and the slide playing is wizardry. get it!

Johnny Kicks out the Jams,
By A C. (Ca.) - See all my reviews

If you like live music, you'll love this album. I bought the vinyl in 1976 and have listened to it ever since. Johnny plays a mean slide guitar and trades licks with Floyd Ratford on Highway 61 Revisited. You'll love this one.

Still sounds good after all these years,
By Vinny "VinnyDC" (Washington DC, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Captured Live (Audio CD)
I read the reviews, as far as "music fan" goes, I never had the LP but the CD sure kicks, it's fantastic because I walked in a record store to buy "Still Alive and Well" but they had "Captured Live" along as a double CD. Giles, I too thought the CD "Captured Live" was too short but coupled with "Still Alive" I got a great deal. Now while "Still Alive" is great, I am truly happy that I found great live Johnny music, it really is all good, and suprisingly the quality from my set sounds great, this type of rock and blues is ageless, in twenty more years it will still sound great, fast and furious as only Johnny Winter can play.
