3.0 out of 5 stars Expected something better from the good reviews October 28, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't mind a little "heat" in my romances, but this book turned me off when it started out with the hero exploring up under the skirts of a barmaid, in public. Yuck! Nothing romantic about that. I thought the writing was good, and the characters came to life on the pages. After the creepy start of the book, the hero proved to be honorable and likable. The heroine was strong and resourceful. The sensuality level of the book is hot. I thought it was unrealistic that the heroine managed to make it to her 20's with her virtue intact, given the way she was raised and the situations she had been in. The hero and heroine have many near-misses when it comes to injury or death--too many times to be plausible. Overall, I would have liked this book better if it had focused more on the growth of the romance between the main couple and less on a fast series of escapades. I wouldn't read this book again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good character development August 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While the setting of the story (American Civil War) is not that appealing to me personally, I was drawn into the story because of the interesting characters. The unusual background of the female lead was a change of pace from most other historical romances, and the writer successfully builds the suspense of the two leads' love story. The story stumbles in a few places, but overall, recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great captor/captive romance, September 8, 2008
By Gemma
Format:Paperback
From the back cover:

A daring love...

Devon Blake's quick wits and good luck helped her survive on the streets of Liverpool. But in America, she finds herself in serious trouble. Accused of spying, she seems destined for the gallows. And it is handsome, dynamic Captain Cole McRae who must lead her to prison.

Treachery destroyed Cole's ship and most of his crew. Now he's determined to see that the beautiful, dark-haired spitfire responsible hangs for her heinous crime--and Devon's wild attempts at escape only fire his fury. But Cole and Devon's daring race through enemy territory ignites a passion stronger than vengeance, and a desire that demands surrender--as captor and captive alike discover there is no breaking the bonds of love's rapturous embrace.

And my review:

Once I'd read Victoria Lynne's Chasing Rainbows, I eagerly sought out her backlist. I enjoyed With this Kiss, but was disappointed by What Wild Moonlight, so I wasn't sure what to expect from CAPTURED. But I'm glad to say, this book provided a very enjoyable historical romance.

While I love history, I always prefer for it to take a backseat to the romance. And that's just what happened here. The historical backdrop never overpowered the love story, and never read like a textbook. The author did a great job of weaving the historical detail into the background of the novel. The plot was fast paced and interesting (with some great plot twists!) but never stole too much time away from the romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars An action packed story... March 28, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Captured by Victoria Lynn was my first book by Ms. Lynne and afterwards, I glommed her other works. The War Between the States is the backdrop of the story, not the focus. Devon comes to America and unfortunately, is convicted of treason. After she tries to escape, Cole is sent to escort her. They fall into one adventure after another. The story is filled with intrigue and action and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag March 3, 2013
By Jay
Format:Kindle Edition
Overall I enjoyed this book. It was well written and the romance was nice, but I found myself skipping ahead at times. Got mighty tired of her "stiffening her spine" which happened, it seemed, every other sentence. The plot was kind of predictable, but nicely paced. I was a little confused when they made love and she was a virgin because when he picked her up from her crude, violent jailers, it was strongly implied that she had been raped. Hence I was confused by her deflowering. Even if her captors had not raped her, a pretty girl who was abandoned at a young age on the mean streets of London, taken in by a swindler to work cons, would probably not have reached her age a virgin. This defied logic, but overall a nice read if you suspend disbelief and just go along for the ride.

3.0 out of 5 stars needs work February 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I like historical novels. This one has the making of a great story but was diminished by the frequent grammatical errors, point of view shifts and underdeveloped cast of characters.

The point in the story where she sends a letter to England for money support from her uncle and then he suddenly just arrives is unrealistic given the era this story was set in - it would taken months just to get the letter to him, much less for him to arrive overseas. And then instead of being glad to see him she wanted to disappear with the main male character. That didn't make much sense to me either. In addition, I felt the point where the male leading character decided to start listening to the main leading female character was weak since up until that point he was adamant about following orders and not giving her side of the story any merit.

Anyway, if you want an okay read, go ahead and read this book, but don't get your expectations up too high.
