5.0 out of 5 stars Captured By Julianne MacLean's Latest March 14, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It took me a while to get caught up on Julianne MacLean's backlist, and once I did it meant I had to wait for new books. When Julianne has a new release it goes to the top of the TBR pile and with good reason. So when I got my grubby little fingers on the first in her new Highlander trilogy last weekend, it popped right up to next on the list.

CAPTURED BY THE HIGHLANDER is different from any of Julianne's books in some ways. Forget gentlemen, drawing rooms, and rules of society. The hero is a man they call The Butcher and the story opens with the choice he has to make - kill Amelia or take her prisoner. Filled with kilts and broadswords, axes and Jacobites, a beautiful woman and of course an English villian masquerading as a redcoat man of honour....not to mention Julianne's fabulous brand of writing and it's a page-turner. I adore Julianne's voice. It's a seamless blend of strong narrative, sparkly dialogue, humour and sensuality.

Several times during the story I could see how it was going to go and for the large part I was right, except it usually didn't happen QUITE the way I imagined but with a clever twist. I don't want to give anything away and be all spoilery, but I did have a few surprises towards the end and I love it when an author makes me think how in the world are they going to find happiness now? I was seriously disappointed in Duncan at one point - not that I blamed him for his actions but I thought "Amelia will never forgive you now!" And yet the HEA did happen and all was well in the end.

Thankfully I do not have as long a wait this time. The next in the trilogy, CLAIMED BY THE HIGHLANDER, is out at the end of the month and features Angus's story with a new heroine of Gwen McEwen. I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb New Highlander Trilogy March 2, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In March 2011, USA Today bestselling author, Julianne MacLean makes her triumphant return to historical romance with a superb new Highlander Trilogy for her new publisher, St. Martin's Press debuting with CAPTURED BY THE HIGHLANDER. In 1716, Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, Lady Amelia Templeton is asleep in bed when she is awakened by a fierce warrior wielding his Lochaber axe at her. The English fiery haired, green-eyed beauty knows that she is in grave danger when she is confronted with the notorious, Duncan MacLean "The Butcher of the Highlands", a Jacobite traitor, who battles with his fellow Highlanders to see James II's son crowned King of England instead of German Prince, George of Hanover. Duncan is shocked when he discovers a gorgeous woman in bed instead of his bitter enemy, Lieutenant-Colonel, Richard Bennett, who he intended to kill that night. He's sure the woman must be Richard's whore but Amelia convinces him she is not only Richard's betrothed but also the daughter of a late revered English Army Colonel, the fifth Duke of Winslowe! Duncan threatens to cut off Amelia's head if she doesn't tell him where Richard is and when she says he's away on a mission Duncan decides to kidnap her. When Amelia refuses to go, Duncan strips her of her nightgown, forces her into her clothes and carries her over his shoulder down the fort wall! As they journey together and the handsome blue-eyed Duncan is joined by some of his men including, Angus "The Lion" MacDonald, Amelia discovers Richard might not be the courageous and honorable man she originally thought. However, Amelia still tries to escape Duncan by knocking him out with a rock and running to an English camp for help. Despite this, Duncan comes to her rescue when he discovers the drunken English soldiers trying to rape her. To see who ends up Amelia's true hero and love of her life read the captivating CAPTURED BY THE HIGHLANDER. Julianne MacLean has penned one of the best kidnap plots I've read in a long time with a dynamite couple and enough sexual tension in this fiery Highland tale to satisfy any romance reader!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much transformation in too short a time March 21, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have enjoyed many of Julianne Maclean's novels but I just did not savor her latest story Captured by the Highlander. It seemed a little off to me. The story felt rushed and some of the emotions from the hero felt forced.

The beginning to this novel is good, set in the violent times of the Scottish and British battles in the early 1700's, hero Duncan MacLean, aka the Butcher is set to kill his enemy, English Officer Richard Bennett. Instead of finding the notorious man he discovers Richard's fiance Lady Amelia Templeton. He kidnaps the beautiful English miss sleeping in Richard's bed.

Amelia is an okay heroine. She was not annoying but she never really captured my attention either. She like many of the captured heroines in romance novels despises her captor yet succumbs to his advances and she does so rather quickly. She is at first very loyal to her fiance; but she perceives that he is not the honorable man she has always believed him to be. Her best trait is her ability to adapt because she goes through some tough circumstances and is able to forge ahead despite having limited control of her fate. Amelia is taken across Scotland by Duncan who falls for her yet has a secret which the reader can figure out easily.

Midway through this novel, the mood and the story shifts. This change is seen most in Duncan's character. His conscience kicked in and he became a remorseful man regarding his past deeds of bloodshed and violence. I wondered at this new Duncan and was not certain I really knew him; after all he had no problem threatening Amelia when he first met her. The question that kept hovering in the back of my mind was whether this inner turmoil was coming from Duncan or was it spurred by Amelia. For me that question wasn't really answered. Duncan's inner thoughts of regret for his violent deeds were not well explored in the first part of this novel. By the middle of this book I thought I knew this man and I liked who he was. Yes he was gruff but he was a soldier. And he was protective of his people. Many romance heroes are stalwart soldiers. He suffered great loss but in a very short amount of time he changes his ways and decides to give up his revenge. I just had a hard time believing this character would act in such a manner.

This author does allow the characters to explore their feelings for each other and this is the best part of this novel. When this couple falls in love, the reader sees it happening. However the rapid transformation of Duncan's character and the fast pace of this novel were drawbacks to this tale.
