Book Description

March 1, 1987
"Capturing the Landscape with Your Camera" will teach you how to analyze the landscape, to arrange its features into strong compositions, and to achieve proper exposure of the nuances you want. Patricia Caulfield takes you out of the classroom and into the real world, where she reveals the practical techniques and critical "seeing" behind this outstanding collection of her photographs. You'll discover how to cope with ever changing patterns of weather, light, color, and form, how to look for shapes, a sense of scale, and compelling focal points. Anyone who wants to express a love for the outdoors through photography will treasure this cornucopia of insights and information.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Nature photographer Caulfield appeals to novice and experienced photographers with techniques for photographing vistas and closeups, and a magnificent collection of 200 full-color photos. The text is well written and organized, not overburdened with jargon and instructs with real-life experiences. Cameras and lenses, formats and focal lengths, and basics of light, exposure, composition, balance and framing are covered. Caulfield teaches how to analyze the landscape, or "to see as the camera sees," by concentrating on subjects' shapes, lines and textures, determining scale, and seeking patterns and focal points. It's okay to break the rules (once you know them), assures Caulfield, because composition is "very personal." Appendixes provide technical information on extreme weather conditions, field packs, film and filters. Photography Book Club main selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really superb book, March 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Capturing the Landscape with Your Camera (Paperback)
I stumbled upon this book at my local library, and decided to see what it was about.

Not only were the pictures clear (and eye-catching), but the text was very clear and descriptive. She gave descriptive details about each photo she shot, and what she recommended (along with what kind of lense would work)

It would've been nice to know more about the author, but for the most part, it was great reading and a true keeper.

3.0 out of 5 stars An alright book, but there are better, June 29, 2000

This book contains a fair amount of good technical information regarding landscape photography, but the photos don't compare with the stunning photos in other books and the information isn't presented in a particularly accessible manner. If you're looking for a landscape photography book, I would suggest there are better books out there than this one.
