2.0 out of 5 stars Not a strong treatment of the subject
Like other volumes in the Eyewitness Books series, Car is full of beautiful photographs and countless interesting tidbits. Initial topics, focusing on both the old-time automobiles as well as how they fit into society, were quite interesting. However, the portions on the innards of the car became technical and rather boring. It reads like a poorly-translated repair...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good technical introduction, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Car (DK Eyewitness Books) (Hardcover)
I have a four year old son that is obsessed with cars, race cars, and boats. The Eyewitness series has been an amazing introduction for him into the technical and historical background of the objects that he loves. I would venture that some portions might be difficult for him to grasp, however he still listens with rapt attention and is able to ask intelligent questions. The series in general has a main paragraph for each page, surrounded by many drawings and photos that contain multiple mini-captions. At four, we typically either read the main paragraph or we focus on the smaller vingettes. These books have enriched our ability to talk about the subjects he likes, have given him some basic technical substance, and are showing him that there is a complex history and engineering behind the cars and boats that he's long admired.

Me and my son have always enjoyed DK eyewitness books they are definitely not a disappointment to read and browse through. The quality is exceptional, of this book and have made the real life photographs realstic to look at.Car is a fascinating look at the world of motor cars, past and present, both in there retro and contemporary design of shape in body in which we not only get a full description of the car,s themselves but also the mechanisms that make them go with a unique view of its entriety. There are many books out there that give a display of the car in it,s entity but not how it actually works inside in which this book is a photo essay of the history, and development on the automobile itself and what they have done to society starting from the earliest horseless carriages right up to the modern racing cars. Car takes you from the very first Benz horse powered vehicle to the more modern stallion of 1979 racing. It's a mechanical info book on motoring vehicles in which nothing is left out and every bit of moving part is explored internally. A must have for any reader who is fascinated about them and their impact on our society and culutre. Most people have absolutely no concept of the engineering feats and the team work involved in producing something that we sit in and take for granted to take us from one place to another in which it is an astonishing combination of design and engineering prowess of expertise in mechanics for human beings in which Leonardo would have been proud of. We are taken through decades of automobile magical history in which, we are not only given the written history in which our visual field is also stimulated as well in it,because it has such visually compelling info in it, that it allows us to see the journey automobiles have made from the earliest known horseless carriages right up to the modern super car in which is an incredible progress of technical ingenuity that has made motorists driving everyday easier for them to live with in the high speed world of the motor car.

This review is from: Eyewitness: Car (Hardcover)
Like other volumes in the Eyewitness Books series, Car is full of beautiful photographs and countless interesting tidbits. Initial topics, focusing on both the old-time automobiles as well as how they fit into society, were quite interesting. However, the portions on the innards of the car became technical and rather boring. It reads like a poorly-translated repair manual at times. My wife and I both felt that it should have stayed with the cultural aspects of automobiles--for example, what has its role been in non-European and non-American societies? Also, a stunning omission is the lack of information on future designs and current experimentation. Not recommended except on a cursory basis.
