Grade 4-6?An appealing and entertaining collection of experiments and games for children traveling by automobile. Activities include designing license plates, measuring the effects of acceleration, finding directions without a compass, using a map, and formulating a weather prediction. Fact sections treat subjects such as the history of the automobile, definitions of road symbols, and the different types of bridges. The computer graphics that appear throughout match the light tone of the text. The book is clearly written and filled with interesting tidbits. However, several of the games presented here are not as stimulating as those found in Sheila Anne Barry's The World's Best Travel Games (Sterling, 1988). As a math and physics major, Ed likes numbers. He's traveled to 61 countries on all 7 continents. He has directed 5 museums (including the National Inventors Hall of Fame and founding the National Toy Hall of Fame) and written more than two dozen books.
He holds a Ph.D. in oceanography and has participated in 20 some expeditions, including doing research on sea ice in Antarctica. With his wife, he has sailed across the Pacific Ocean and has done a circumnavigation teaching oceanography for Semester at Sea. Ed is a Fellow Emeritus in The Explorers Club.
An avid outdoors person, Ed runs, bikes, swims, kayaks, and SCUBA dives. Along the way he searches for the unusual gizmo to take apart or at least figure out how it works.

Perfect for summer travel with the kids!,

An excellent book for kids who get "bored" on those long (and short) road trips during the summer. The book is full of exercises for creativity and invention that will occupy kids for hours. And the book uses information on the road that allows kids to be interactive with the sights around them. I wouldn't go on another summer trip without this book!
