This review is from: Car Wars Tanks: Military Vehicles for the Battlefields of the Future [BOX SET] (Hardcover)
In a game like Car Wars, where vehicles are turned essentially into mini-tanks, one would think that tank rules would have been one of the first things published. But none such was the case. Car Wars fans had a brief taste of tanks in an ADQ that published a story about the XM-Dempsey, but nothing much beyond that. In fact, we got a lot of other vehicles and rules to arm them way before real bonafide tanks hit the scene. Why that is is anyone's guess, but the real question is was it worth the wait?I shrug at it. I liked the supplement for what it was. It had actual tanks in the rules set. Real honest to goodness turreted armored behemoths, instead of James Bond knock offs sporting a few machine guns and dropped weapons. I think the rules for building an actual armored fighting vehicle were way overdue, and when they finally did rear their head, the presentation was almost anti-climactic. Car Wars had presented a post apocalyptic future rebuilt, and when cars are whizzing about on the roads of the future slamming rockets, 50-cal rounds, and god knows what else at one another, one would think that the obvious solution to all of this mayhem would be the military's tanks. But it took years to get rules for tanks. And when they came the tanks were all but nearly outclassed, or hyper armored. It was a difficult proposition. On the one hand the tank rules were welcomed, along with several example designs. On the other hand they seemed of an odd fit for the Car Wars realm. But, they worked... after a fashion. Example; metal armor; one point was destroyed for every roll of a "6" on a die. I cannot remember whether this was from all weapons, or only specific weapons deemed to be able to scratch metal plate, but regardless, it added a much needed component to the game, but said component was almost too costly to add to normal cars. In any event, it was the supplement that was needed a long time ago, but came a bit late. All in all a decent addon to one of my favorite sim/war games from the 80s. Although having said that, I do think that paying $300+ smackers listed here is way too much. |
