Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4?Jura, 10, tells of going on his first caravan through the mountain passes of the Afghan Pamirs to trade his family's furs and felts for grains in the city. His pride in being old enough to be a part of this important event reflects his admiration for his father, who leads the convoy. The boy takes readers along on his journey as he encounters the awesome, stark beauty of the mountains and the difficulties of passing along the steep, snowy trails while riding a mare and leading three laden camels. The poetic writing skillfully describes a world far different from one containing automobiles, VCRs, and computers. The illustrations, glowing in earthy hues of browns, golds, and blues, show the details of this way of life. Ligasan portrays small things, such as the knots on the yurt in which the men sleep, as well as the larger aspects of the landscape and the high dome of the mosque in the city. The layout, with the richly textured illustrations set in a stylized frame, is handsome. Words and pictures elucidate not only the customs of another culture, but also a boy's rite-of-passage and adventure with his father. An author's note gives details of the Kirghiz people and their environment. Refreshing and unobtrusively instructive.?Susan Middleton, LaJolla Country Day School, CA

4.0 out of 5 stars Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Caravan (Paperback)
Jura, a ten-year old child who lives in Afghanistan, has just embarked on his first trip through the mountains in a caravan of adult men, horses, and camels. They are traveling more than a hundred miles - a journey that takes ten days - across mountain passes, over frozen rivers, and through deep valleys to reach the city. The difficult journey results in a substantial reward: the opportunity to trade their felts and furs for badly-needed grain. Before they return home, Jura enjoys the sights and smells of the marketplace, watching some merchants dye wool and joining some of the men for tea and conversation. Caravan hits the mark with its warm illustrations, clear lessons about trade and markets, and an engrossing story about a child coming of age amongst a nomadic people of Afghanistan.

5.0 out of 5 stars travel to the middle east, April 25, 2009
This review is from: Caravan (Paperback)
This book follows the nomadic people of the Kirghiz caravaners on a journey across the wild wilderness and to the big city where they do trading. This book is drawn and written well, it even has some words that I've never seen before and at the very end it explains what they mean, and should keep readers reading until the very end. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a good picture book.
