3.0 out of 5 stars Strangely uneven
This compilation CD comprises two original albums. Caravan to Midnight was rather experimental, and somewhat unusual for Robin Trower. The opening cut, Burning Love, is a powerful rocker, as is King of the Dance. The title track is a nice instrumental that features his trademark guitar lines. But several others come across as failed experiments. The guitar lines...

When most people mention Robin Trower they think of his early work (Bridge Of Sighs) etc... but don't let these two Trower gems slip by your appreciation for him and his band. Caravan To Midnight (released in'78) is probably my favorite of the two. If you have some time to sit down and relax for a brief period of time, this is the release to choose. James Dewars voice has never sounded better.Cuts like Birthday Boy, King Of The Dance
and My Love(Burning Love) are truly gorgeous pieces of music.Trowers band is tight and the production values are top notch on every cut.The same goes for Victims Of The Fury. This release rocks a little more than Caravan, but it's true Trower at his finest. My favorite cuts on Victims are Jack And Jill and
The Shout. Growing up in a small town in the late 70's all you heard was Queen, Rush, Aerosmith etc.. I am truly pleased that I discovered these two fine pieces of music and I still listen to both of them to this day. Crank up your stereo and strap yourself in for some of Trowers most unappreciated work available.Music like this never ages, it just seems to get better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to expand your Trower collection, November 19, 1998

IF you are a Trower fan and have "Essential Robin Trower" , this two album on one CD is a great way to broaden your Trower exposure. It has both sides of Trower music: the blusey passion of Caravan to Midnight and the hot rocks of Victims of the Fury. Although Victims of the Fury is the only song from this two album compilation found on Essential Robin Trower, there is much prime music here that could have extended the Essential disc from 16 to 21 or more tracks. It's one of my favorite discs and better buys. There are 19 total tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: MISSING A SONG!!!, June 16, 2007
This review is from: Caravan to Midnight/Victims of the Fury (Audio CD)
I bought this CD as well as all the other available Robin Trower two-fers as a cheap way to replace all my old Trower LPs. However I discovered that the song "The Shout" from Victims Of The Fury is missing, apparently sacrificed due to time constraints caused by the double offering. It is one of the best songs on the original album, and I believe it was one of the "single" releases. A glaring omission! If they really had to kill a tune, I would rather have seen "One In A Million" get the axe. Other than that, everything is great! I have always loved VOTF, and slowly but surely the tunes from Caravan have grown on me.

4.0 out of 5 stars WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, September 26, 2010

This review is from: Caravan to Midnight/Victims of the Fury (Audio CD)
Now, i'm not warning against buying this product-but let me say this: Victims of the Fury is out of order; not only that, it has had two songs removed from it and replaced with other songs. "None but the Brave" is a track from Trower's Fabulous 1983 album, Back It Up. "One In A Million," also, was not on the original CD. the Tracks "The SHout" and "Ready For The Taking," are missing from this reissue but WERE on the original CD. So, that being said, GET Back It Up, which originally has "None But The Brave" (no idea why it's included here but it is) and you can also get the original CD of Victims of the Fury on Amazon, but it's out of print so it'll be pricey--I paid 20 bucks for it. But, then you'll have the original of Victims of the Fury with no MISSING SONGS as on this reissue. (the track "one in a million" is as far as i know only available in this reissue--I have no idea where it came from!!!! it's not on another album like none but the brave so i dunno!) However, the "fixed" alternate version of VOTF is actualy pretty darn cool, too!!! And, as i said, then you can have the song "one in a milion," which seems to be unique to this reissue. So, if you just have the original album first, then you can enjoy this "different" one as well. However, if you're not a diehard completist Trower fan like me, then you'd be just fine with this VOTF reissue.

I hope this wasn't too confusing a review, logistically, just trying to inform folks like me who would want to know all of that stuff.

Anyway, absolutely awesome music, you can't go wrong with Trower!

This review is from: Caravan to Midnight/Victims of the Fury (Audio CD)
This compilation CD comprises two original albums. Caravan to Midnight was rather experimental, and somewhat unusual for Robin Trower. The opening cut, Burning Love, is a powerful rocker, as is King of the Dance. The title track is a nice instrumental that features his trademark guitar lines. But several others come across as failed experiments. The guitar lines resemble ambient music more than metal, and the vocals are pitched much higher, a seemingly inexplicable decision given singer James Dewar's baritone voice. On Victims of the Fury, Trower returned to the heavy blues-based rock that had made him famous, and the vocals are back in the lower range. The songs are for the most part short and concise, while the lyrics are rather bleak, dealing with themes like war and inner pain. These songs, although not bad by any means, are not in the same league as the material on his earlier albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caravan To Midnight/Victims Of The Fury, February 19, 2005
This review is from: Caravan to Midnight/Victims of the Fury (Audio CD)
Personaly I thought this a great work.I spent many an evening enjoying it. I also liked BLT with Jack Bruce on bass. Although the style was somewhat more reserved it was a compliment to the collection of the works of Robbin Trower.

I'm a serious, long time Trower fan. I have both of these releases on vinyl and would have given this effort 5 stars. The only reason I didn't was that my favorite album, "Victims of the Fury", was hacked and twisted up. "Caravan" is all here, song for song, but as another reviewer pointed out about "Victims", "The Shout" is nowhere to be found. Also, "Ready for the Taking" is absent. Both excellent cuts and very worthy of being here. And If someone can tell me where "One in a Million" comes from, I sure would like to know. I won't complain about the addition of "None But The Brave" from the CD "Back It Up". It rocks. "Victims" cuts are all over the place compared to the vinyl record. The CD reads "Remastered From Original Master Tapes." But who's masters? Not to worry, if you're a fan, buy it anyway. Hope you don't drool too much, but I was in the front row of "The Crown Lounge" in Miami standing 5 feet from Trower JAMMIN'into my brain for a couple hours about 1988-89. Where are you, Robin? I wanna pray at your feet again!!

I've always enjoyed these albums but I prefer the out of print cd's of one album per disc. Simply because on the two per cd they leave out 'the shout' one of the best rockin tracks. But that being said it's better to have these than nothing.
