Book Description

September 1997
Would your youngster be happy living on just burgers, fries, chicken nuggets, and pizza?

Does your child or teen experience mood swings, extremes in energy levels, learning problems, lack of motivation, or weight problems?

Are you tired of worrying, nagging, getting frustrated, and feeling helpless or guilty about your youngster's eating habits?

Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids can help you and your child overcome these problems to find the right nutritional balance and peace of mind.

In their bestselling The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller describe the powerful cycle of carbohydrate addiction in adults. Now, in this new, groundbreaking book, they bring their overwhelming successful strategy to children and teens. If, like millions of American kids, your youngster is carbohydrate-addicted, junk food, sweets, and even "healthy" high-carbo, low-fat foods can wreak havoc on insulin and blood sugar levels and lead to a number of emotional, behavioral, learning, mood, and weight problems.

Drawing on more than a decade of research as well as personal experience, this inspiring and knowledgeable husband-and-wife team have helped more than a million people in their quest for ideal eating and health.

Youngsters on the Carbohydrate Addict's Program for Children and Teens (CAP-CAT) can choose from two equally helpful plans: The Step-By-Step Plan helps your youngster make small lifestyle changes one at time, and The Jump-Start Plan, designed for the older child or teen, leads to quicker, more dramatic results. In both plans, no calorie counting, portion control, or measuring is needed. Physician recommendations can be incorporated easily, and virtually all foods are allowed.

Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids presents the first program to correct the root cause of carbo cravings. Your youngster's drive for snack foods and sweets will decrease naturally. As insulin and blood-sugar levels become normal again, a new child will emerge. Your child will soon be able to enjoy a wide variety of foods, gain control over weight and behavior, and get the most out of life. This is far more than an eating plan. It can bring balance and freedom to child, parent, and family.

Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids includes:

A simple quiz to determine your youngster's level of addiction

Clear facts on carbo addiction: what causes it and what to do about it

Exciting and easy recipes for kids and parents on the go, as well as for the time-conscious gourmet

Low-fat and vegetarian recipes and special suggestions for the vegetable-phobic child or teen

Surprisingly simple strategies for success

Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids will help you create your own plan for getting your youngster off the blood-sugar roller coaster--for good.

Can You Spot Your Carbohydrate-Addicted Kid?

Carbohydrate-addicted kids come in all shapes and sizes. See if any of these look familiar.

The Locust: Whether slim or overweight, the Locust seems to be ever-hungry and consume great quantities of food. Parents may be unsure whether they're observing a "healthy" appetite or an addiction to junk food, snacks, and sweets.

The Rabbit: Often very active, this nibbler would prefer to eat on the run. Some Rabbits are naturally slim, while some struggle with their weight; in either case, parents may not realize that blood-sugar dips may be the source of their youngster'' mood swings, extremes in energy levels, learning problems, and difficulties in concentration.

The Bear: A dedicated lover of starches and junk food, the Bear can consume these in great quantities and, after eating, often becomes sluggish. These kids have a tendency to put on pounds easily, and changing seasons can bring changes in their appetite, activity levels, and weight.

The Sponge: If it's liquid, it disappears in the presence of the Sponge. Eternally thirsty, these kids consume great quantities or regular or artificially sweetened soda, sports drinks, fruit juice, ice tea, and milk. The thirst that drives the Sponge is usually a quest for carbos rather than a physical need for fluid. Sponges can experience a wide variety of problems related to low blood sugar.

The Fruit Bat: Nonstop consumers of fresh, canned, or dried fruit, the Fruit Bat (or any weight) may appear to be eating "healthy" foods. Parents may not realize that an addiction to carbohydrates may be causing serious psychological learning, or weight problems.

Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids can help your child break free of carbo cravings, sugar highs, and sugar lows--without deprivation--for life.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Does your child crave cookies, ice cream, candy, and sodas? He or she may be suffering from carbohydrate addiction: "a compelling hunger, craving or desire for carbohydrate-rich foods; an escalating, recurring need or drive for starches, snack foods, junk food, sweets." In Carbohydrate Addicted Kids, Richard and Rachael Heller, authors of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, have developed a program specifically for children and teens to free them from their dependence on carbohydrates and improve their attitude, weight, learning, and self-esteem. Rachael Keller's own moving story--enduring ridicule and loneliness because of her weight, and topping 300 pounds by age 17--draws the reader in. Not until age 36 did she discover that her dieting (including sugar-filled meal-replacement drinks and juice fasts) only made her crave sweets more, and that limiting her carbohydrate intake made the cravings disappear. She dropped 165 pounds by eating high-protein breakfasts and lunches, salads and vegetables, and balanced dinners.

The Kellers explain how to figure out if your child is addicted to carbohydrates, and, if so, what type (locust, rabbit, bear, sponge, or fruit bat). Since one size doesn't fit all, they present two different programs--"Step-by-Step" and "Jump-Start"--each with many variations. Recipes are included. --Joan Price

5.0 out of 5 stars Carbohydrate Addicted Kids, January 1, 2000
The book is excellent. I have read all of the Heller's books and I think this one is one of their best. It makes so much sense and really offers a lot of suggestions on how to help our children change their eating habits, as well as helping our kids achieve weight loss. It also addresses several behavioral issues as possibly being food related and offers suggestions for correcting these behaviors through food. I have been introducing new foods to even my 3 year old daughter like they recommend, and she has responded positively. It really does work. I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE with kids, and a great read for adults too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Can Save Your Child's Life, May 30, 2002

I ordered and read the adult version of this book. Within one week I ordered and read this book knowing that in I would find the answers to my daughter's diet problems. She has been following the program for only 5 days and has already experienced a dramatic drop in cravings. Her behavior and attention has never been better. She has also lost a pound already. I turned to this program as a solution for my weight but have found so much more. Never before had I been relieved of my obsession for sweets and breads. This program did just that for both of us! If you think you may need it you probably do. Just read the book. It explains it all. Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss this further.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different from the others, August 2, 2005

I was surprised at the different plan laid out for kids. It definitely is a lot easier for them to follow and slowly work into than the more serious, but successful, plan for adults in their other books. Even if your child is borderline overweight and you just want to know how to fix them better snacks, etc. than this has some great info.
