Editorial Reviews

Review

Argun has produced a study which fulfills my greatest hopes an urgent action plan to move Earth in a dignified way out of intensive care. --Helen Caldicott, M.D., Founding President, Nuclear Policy Research Institute

This Roadmap could liberate us from an energy policy that is trashing out climate and out mountaintops, that is polluting our land, sea, and air, that is trying to resurrect dangerous nuclear power, and that has America so dependent on imported oil that our foreign policy is the prisoner of oil. Arjun has a stellar technical track record. I have no doubt that, with determination and guts, we can achieve a renewable energy economy. Arjun has laid out a thoughtful and practical approach to get us there. --S. David Freeman President, Los Andeles Board of Harbor Commissioner, and former Chairman, Tennessee Valley Authority

Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free is an excellent report that I have already used in public lectures and in internal corporate briefings. Its recommendations are a call to action that will pout the U.S. economy on a course in harmony with the environment rather that at loggerheads with it. This Roadmap deserves serious attention in government and industry. --John M. Miller PE, PhD VP Advanced Transportation Applications, Maxwell Technologies, Inc.

The Author seems to have a an impeccable background to write this book. The Foreword mentions the large cost savings plan he recommended for the TVA which in later years was actualized. This a well written book for the layman, a good overview of the technologies that are competitive now, and a timetable/roadmap that in the author' opinion could lead to a carbon free/ nuclear free future.
The good news presented by this book is that the change-over to a carbon free future is a not a hopeless situation. The author greatly details where wind power and solar power are advantageous, along with specifing the geographical regions and their respective contributions to base and peak power. The book is very specific on what technologies can produce electricity or hydrogen competitively or whether the technology has to wait on technical breakthroughs or higher volume demand.

Arjun Makhijani created President Carter's Energy policy and changed the conversation that more GNP means more energy spent.

Although he did not believe it my he started to right the book, he came to believe that there are many paths were we can give up fossil fuels and nuclear power completely in the next 30 to 40 years.

He shows the road map only considering technology that is available now or will most certainly be available in the next 5 years.

We have the technology right now to get rid of nuclear power and fossil fuels forever. Let's do it now before we fry the planet.

It's all doable, and the detail and care here make it feel kind of likely. It certainly helps muster the political will to read this. It's slightly obsolete (published in 2007) in its concern for our dependence on foreign oil. Now that we're a net oil exporter, this is not a major concern. But don't hesitate to read it on that account. It's still plenty up-to-date in its essential vision of abandoning carbon fuels and moving into a clean economy.

Arjun Makhijani has a way for this country to truly become energy independent. In 37 years Arjun has never had any of his work questioned; he is the top in his field. This book is quite technical in places but almost everyone will be able to understand and comprehend where he is taking this. We must do something and we must do it now - waiting 10 years for new nuclear power plants (even if all the problems of cost, waste, health and safety were to be solved) makes no sense whatsoever. Read this book then share it with your congresspeople, local people involved in energy policy, anyone that can implement this great roadmap that needs to be followed.
